Seagate Technology sells external hard drives formatted in different ways.

How does that matter?

You’ll find different formats Seagate external hard drive. Also known as file systems. These file systems or formats tell your Mac how the drive is laid out.

How Seagate formats your external hard drive opens up. Or restricts what you can do with your drive on your Mac computer.

Seagate Expansion ExFAT
Backup Plus Slim ExFAT
Seagate Portable NTFS

And for example, the Seagate Backup Plus Hub is NTFS formatted.

A Seagate With An ExFAT File System On Mac

Mac users can plug an ExFAT formatted Seagate external hard drive into a Mac. Your Mac will see the drive.

You’ll can copy and paste your files to that Seagate USB drive. Or drag and drop whatever you need to your Seagate drive.

The other advantage of an ExFAT Seagate formatted external hard drive? Is a Windows PC understands ExFAT as well.

This makes ExFAT a great file system to have. Especially, when you want to share your Seagate drive between your Mac and a Windows PC.

But the downside of ExFAT is that you can’t use your Seagate drive for a Time Machine backup. Not without reformatting first.

Seagate With An NTFS File System On Mac

When you plug in your Seagate NTFS formatted external hard drive into your Mac. Your Mac can see any documents or files already on the drive.

But you won’t be able to change any of the documents or files on there.

You can only copy them to your Mac. And work on them on your Mac. You can’t copy those changed files back to the drive.

This is because NTFS is a Windows file system.

You also can’t use an NTFS Seagate drive for your Time Machine backup. You’ll need to reformat first.

Apple made two file systems for Macs. And you can use the disk management software on your Mac, Disk Utility to easily change your Seagate Portable. Or Seagate desktop to these Mac only formats.

A Mac OS Extended Journaled Seagate

This file system is also known as HFS+. This is a Mac only file system.

You can use a Seagate external hard drive formatted as HFS+ for a Time Machine backup.

So, if anything happens to your Mac you can restore your Mac’s specific set up. And your all your files and applications Mac from a Time Machine backup.

You can split up a large enough Mac OS Extended Seagate drive into partitions.

This allows you to have one section say for your Time Machine backups. And another section to copy and paste files to.

You could even have a third section set up as ExFAT to share with a Windows PC.

An APFS (Apple File System) Seagate

Is the other type of Mac file system.

Made for Solid State drives.  It’s a faster Mac file system suited to those drives.  And you could reformat your Seagate Solid State Drive to APFS.

Only another Mac can read APFS.

Since Mac OS X Big Sur you can Time Machine backup to an APFS formatted drive.

Earlier Mac OS X’s (Sierra or earlier) do not support a Time Machine backup to a Seagate drive formatted as APFS. You can also partition a Seagate formatted as APFS.
