HP Pavilion Desktop overheating

Excessive heat can be a problem in laptops due to their small size and the close proximity of the internal components. The HP ZD Pavilion series of laptops is no exception, even though these computers are designed to dissipate as much heat as possible. When the temperature rises, the fans spin faster and become noisier as they work to push the hot air out. Excessive heat can slow your computer down and make it uncomfortable to work on or damage system components, so prevent this from happening to avoid downtime and extra expense for your business.

  1. Adjust the power options so that the processor runs slightly slower, reducing heat production. Click "Start | Control Panel | Hardware and Sound | Power Options | Change Plan Settings | Change Advanced Power Settings," then click the down arrow to reduce the maximum processor state to 98 percent or less. Additionally, change "System Cooling Policy" to "Active" to make the system increase fan speed instead of throttle.

  2. Place a laptop fan on the bottom to help draw the heat away naturally. Laptop coolers are available from many electronics retailers. Find one that is at least the same width of the laptop to ensure it fits properly. As an extra precaution, turn on the air conditioning or open the windows to reduce the temperature in the room where you're using the computer.

  3. Use a can of compressed air to blow dust away from the vents. Any type of blockage in this area prevents the fans from doing their jobs. The same goes for any other objects that could block airflow. Keep the laptop on a firm surface to let the air flow across the bottom, and pull it away from walls or surfaces that could block the rear.

  4. Open the laptop -- if your laptop is no longer under warranty -- and clean the heatsink fan, which pulls heat away from the processor. While wearing an anti-static wrist strap, gently scrub the fan with rubbing alcohol while holding it still with the other hand. Take off the heatsink and scrape off the old thermal paste on the CPU. Replace it with a fresh thermal compound, available online from places like Newegg, eBay and Best Buy. Check HPs Self Repair Services to find instructions for your specific model.

When i start Watch dogs 2, Cod Warzone or just far cry primal it starts heating up to 80°C. But when i am using for other things like youtube and etc. It is usually between 32°C to 50°C. There is no dust in fans, they are perfectly working. I installed newest BIOS. All drivers are up to date. I dont get it. Need your help

My desktop keeps overheating. I checked and cleaned it all again. I thought the CPU fan was not working correctly so I had that replaced. How do I figure out what is wrong? I installed the Core Temp tool but not sure what it is telling me.

Core #0 Max 94

Core #1 Max 100

Core #2 Max 93

Core #3 Max 93

Is it the CPU or the whole motherboard that is bad?

those temps are way too hot,

you need to remove the CPU heat sink from the motherboard, which is underneath the CPU fan,

clean the heat sink,

remove old thermal paste from the CPU and heat sink,

apply new thermal paste,

re-install the heat sink/CPU fan assembly

I installed the Core Temp tool but not sure what it is telling me.

I missed this, sorry.  Some Temp readers will not read some cpu's correctly, but CoreTemp does a pretty good job.  I think we should still see the Speccy Chart to make sure.

There are specific ways of applying Thermal Paste also that I like to adhere to.  With most desktops it is a long thin line in a specific direction keeping it from the edges.  Then when you put the Heatsink on, you give it a slight twist back and forth mashing it, then tighten the heatsink fasteners each a little bit at a time starting diagonally from corner to corner.  Then go around little by little to finish them up.

The CPU fan was replaced by a repair shop because I thought they knew what they were doing and I did not have the thermal compound. I just ordered the thermal compound and I should get it by the 3rd. Then I will take the fan off, clean the CPU, and put it back with some new thermal compound. In the meantime, I will use my laptop.

Good because that is very hot and is not good to run it that hot!  I would assume it overheated and dried out the thermal paste, now it needs new thermal paste.

When you pull the fan and heatsink try to pay attention how easily it comes off and how dried out the old thermal paste is.

make sure you clean the old thermal paste from the CPU and heat sink, alcohol wipes are great to use,

when applying the new thermal paste, less is more, you only need a spec of it,

apply a small drop in the middle of the CPU, the drop should be about HALF the size of a grain of rice

then install the heat sink, fan assembly

I like to somewhat follow ArticSilvers guidelines.  Scroll to page 5 and look at QP2
