Are there any updates on a fix for this problem? I just started having the screen flicker issue with Remote Desktop running Big Sur.

Hi,
Several steps you could have a try:
1.Go to Microsoft Remote Desktop > preferences > General Tab> uncheck “use system proxy configurations “ and
Also uncheck “Use hardware acceleration ”

This is one suggestion shared in another thread and many users reported that if fixed their issues.
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/answers/questions/163352/after-big-sur-was-loaded-on-mac-book-pro-now-the-m.html

2.Please try the beta version which included the newest testing features than the officially released version:

Microsoft Remote Desktop not working on Mac Big Sur

https://install.appcenter.ms/orgs/rdmacios-k2vy/apps/microsoft-remote-desktop-for-mac/distribution_groups/all-users-of-microsoft-remote-desktop-for-mac

3.Please also update the VPN version if used in your remote connection.

Hope this helps and please help to accept as Answer if the response is useful.

Thanks,
Jenny

Thanks Jenny!!!

Mine just started crashing today both on my MacBook Pro and iMac due to macOS Big Sur update. I downloaded beta version 10.5.0 (1836) just as you have suggested and boom! I am able to connect without any issues now. I have been unable to connect all afternoon today and glad I am able to connect now so I can get my presentation ready for work for 9am tomorrow morning! Whew!

Super thank you for this link! https://install.appcenter.ms/orgs/rdmacios-k2vy/apps/microsoft-remote-desktop-for-mac/distribution_groups/all-users-of-microsoft-remote-desktop-for-mac

I'm also having RDP issues after Big Sur update. My issues is after connecting, the window rapidly "flickers" I'm running OS X 11.0.1 and RDP client 10.4.1. Turning off hardware acceleration doesn't work.

I've found that by not using 'full screen' and instead using 'fit to window', I was able to get rid of the flickering I experienced. I good enough workaround for me.

I'm having the same issue. I tried the recommendations mentioned above but they didn't work for me. I have Microsoft remote desktop 10.5.0 version and Big Sur as well. How can I make it work again? I tried calling Microsoft but unable to speak with a real person.

Error code: 0x204

I am able to connect from a different Mac that doesn't have the Big Sur update, so evidently the remote computer is ok. The problem is the upgrade.

For me, Remote Desktop worked under both Catalina and Big Sur until we removed NTLM authentication to force Kerberos only. Once this was done, Domain\Users could no longer log into remote computers. The only account that does work is the Domain\Admins account. Administrators can log into remote machines as Administrator but they cannot log in as any other user.

In my case, it would appear to be an authentication issue when Active Directory is not using NTLM.

We have tried the latest Beta build 10.5.1 and it has the same issue.

I can't remote to windows server via mac big sur

When I remote to VPS (windows server 2016) I get this error: "the username or password is incorrect. try again" But I pretty sure that I used the correct username and password, I even use the on-screen keyboard on VPS logon page but nothing changed and I got the error again and again! I can remote from my iPhone without any problem but when I try to remote from my mac I can't! my mac version is Big Sur 11.2.3.

Hello @Mostafa-3426 ,

  1. temporary workaround may be to disable NLA; Besides, what's the version of your Remote Desktop client for Mac? Try to update it to the latest version: https://install.appcenter.ms/orgs/rdmacios-k2vy/apps/microsoft-remote-desktop-for-mac/distribution_groups/all-users-of-microsoft-remote-desktop-for-mac

2.Do you use .rdp file for remote? Have you tried to reboot the mac and reconfigure the .rdp file by exporting and importing again?
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/answers/questions/224756/remote-desktop-app-on-macos-big-sur-not-working-wi.html

3.Make sure you typed the Mac username and password correctly.
In some cases, you may need to reset the password for the account in Users & Groups preferences. To reset the password, choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Users & Groups.

Make sure you typed the Windows username and password correctly.
The password for the Windows user account you’re using may need to be changed on the Windows computer.
In some cases, the Windows computer may need to be restarted after the password is changed.

After installing Big Sur, I receive the following message when I run MRD: "We couldn't connect to the remote PC. Make sure the PC is turned on and connected to the network, and that remote access is enabled.

Error code: 0x204"

As a previous user, I had tried many times with "Use system proxy configuration" and "Use hardware acceleration when possible." (both on, both off or 1 on 1 off).

The version I use:

macOS Big Sur 11.0.1

Microsoft Remote Desktop: Version 10.5.0 (1841)

I would be very grateful if you could provide me a solution

PS: I still can connect to my company network through VPN (FortiClient).

If the limitations of the Royal TS Lite Version are ok for you it's free.

Microsoft Remote Desktop hangs on MacOS Big Sur when switching screens

I am experiencing this bug very consistently. I am running MS RDP client on MacOS (Apple MacBook M1) and all is fine until I switch screens using the CTRL-Left/Right arrows and then return to the screen with the session. My system immediately BEACHBALLS continuously, sometimes a bug report is sent.

Is there any other information I need to get some resolution to this? I am very disappointed as I need this tool for my work, and having to kill the process and log back in is a pain which I seem to have to do multiple times per hour. I have tried alternates such as x2go client but it presents other problems which I am not going to go into at the moment.

I have googled this issue and it seems to have been around for years. Is there at least some work going into debugging it? I hope so.

Thank you,
Michael Uman

I know this is months later, but I too am having this issue with the M1 Macbook Pro. I'm running MacOS Monteray now, but I was on Big Sur and having this problem.

I removed the App Store version of Microsoft Remote Desktop and installed the Beta version from the link you provided. It seems to have solved my issue. I've flipped back and forth between my MacOS desktop and the fullscreen instance of RDP, and all seems to be okay so far.

For anyone else who stumbles across this, the beta app may solve your issue as well.

Hi,
1.Have you tried to reboot the mac and reconfigure the .rdp file by exporting and importing again?

2.Instead of using .rdp file, please also try to set up user account and save credentials in rdc for mac.

  • Go to Preferences, click on the "User Accounts" tab and select the connection that is saved. Enter the password in the Password field where it says "Optional".

  • Close the window and now you will not be prompted to enter the password again

https://remotedesktop.uservoice.com/forums/287834-remote-desktop-client-for-mac/suggestions/39110791-passwords-not-saved-anymore

3.As below thread indicated that the saved credentials should be stored in below path:
/Users/$USER/Library/Containers/com.microsoft.rdc.mac/Data/Library/Preferences/com.microsoft.rdc.mac.plist
Applications/Utilities/Keychain Access
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/answers/questions/159746/microsoft-remote-desktop-password.html
https://support.apple.com/guide/keychain-access/what-is-keychain-access-kyca1083/mac

Hope this helps and please help to accept as Answer if the response is useful.

Thanks,
Jenny

Hi JennyYan,

Thank you for your help.

Let me explain more about my case.

RDP file is provide by admin. Which I will not be able to know the password of the remote machine.

If I want to access to remote machine I have to download a new RD Pfile every time. RDP can be used once.

Thanks
Seksit.

Hi,
Thanks for the update.
So have you tried to open the .rdp file with remote desktop client running in windows computer?
Or kindly confirm with the admin if anything has been changed in the .rdp files since they were used for once.

When it comes to .rdp file failed to save credentials, it is probably related to the settings configured on the RDSH or the "allow me to save credentials" setting on mstsc (if windows OS).

After we exclude the possible cause with the .rdp file itself, you could report the feedback via the application to the RDC product team and let them check further if it is compatibility issue.

At last, I found there is a new beta version released today which you could have a try.
