Vince Gerace: I wonder what would happen if the Bulls would make Vuch more the centerpiece of the offense going forward like they did in Miami. Zach and DeMar are still going to get their looks and Vooch may turn into the player he was in Orlando. The way I see it there's still 52 games left in the season, it the Bulls can get their act together they can still get into the top 6 and make the noise they were expecting to make this season, especially if Lonzo can return and contribute.

Sam: I’m not sure about Lonzo since if he’s still saying there’s pain, it would seem to me shortsighted to push him now for a top six spot. I’d rather give him a chance to get back close to fully healthy by next season since he has two years remaining on his contract. As I often note, this is not the last season for the NBA. But it’s also not inconceivable juggling the guards the way Donovan has lately and giving more time to Dragić that the Bulls could make their way up in an East that’s uncertain after the top four or five. I believe Billy did subtly feature Vučević more by playing him in later rotations more with LaVine, who stretches the court with his shooting, than with DeRozan, who crowds the post and often pushes Vučević outside because DeRozan needs the paint area to score. Because of the rush of games and the way the energy, the schedule and injuries deliver highs and lows in the NBA by game more than other sports, it’s trending up for the Bulls with two good wins on this trip, especially winning the second of a back to back against a rested team. Hey, I picked them fifth, so I’m not giving in yet.

Rocky Rosado: I think at this point the Bulls have to consider going another direction. The play-in cannot be the aspiration of these three players. Defense from these three together was always going to be the problem. The returns on these three players could have much more long term benefits than staying the course. I think it is time to consider blowing this team up. Here are some trade thoughts:
1st: LaVine to the Knicks for Hartenstein, Toppin, Grimes, Rose, '23 1st round pick via Knicks, 23 1st round pick via Dallas.
2nd: DeMar DeRozan to Hawks for John Collins, 23 1st round pick.
3rd: Alex Caruso, Javonte Green, Tony Bradley to Golden State for James Wiseman, Patrick Baldwin Jr..
4th: Andre Drummond, Derrick Jones Jr., Marko Simonovic for Jakob Poetl.

Sam: Can they keep the Bulls logo? I like 4, though Poeltl probably goes somewhere for a lot more, and I’m sure Atlanta likes 2 especially after Wednesday night. Not that winning two games to get within five games of .500 is an achievement, but I believe what those two good wins did was reassured management and validated its belief that this roster is good enough to do what it believes and maybe get a round or two in the playoffs. Not many of us around the team believed there was anything drastic being considered even as the losses mounted and the basketball world began screaming to blow it up. Karnišovas always has said he prides himself on his patience. And even if Lonzo Ball cannot return this season or does on a cited basis, the sense I still get is they’d rather ride it out as is and maybe even be a buyer at the buyout deadline with the Eastern Conference deep but not that threatening. You know, 2-1 over Boston, 2-0 on Miami, 1-0 in Milwaukee. So why panic?

Jim O’Rourke: How much say does Billy have in the roster? You know I'll never forgive him for benching Lauri. I can't imagine they brought in all these guys and maxed Zach without his input.

Sam: I’d say not much. Though not because they don’t care what he thinks. I’ve heard Billy loves being with the Bulls because he’s so much more involved with management than he’d been before. But I get the sense with him that he’s more the classic coach who believes it’s his role to coach and their role to supply the talent. I suspect if he hated someone he’d let them know, but I’ve never heard him say anything negative about anyone who’s ever dribbled a basketball. Karnišovas seems confident in his judgments and I suspect wields a dominant hand in the construction of the roster.

Darrin Shahid: Can we get D Fox now? Fox, Monk and Murray for DeRozan and Vooch or DeRozan and Zach.

Sam: Seems like the Kings finally have something pretty good going and have reenergized the community, so they don’t seem likely to make any significant changes, especially for older players. Fox is a burgeoning star and should be an All-Star this season if the Kings keep it up.

Barron Hall: Who can the Bulls get without breaking up their core or giving up future assets? Is Evan Fournier worth a second rounder? His shooting would help the second unit and he could give DeRozan and LaVine some rest. What could Patrick Williams bring back? If a first or first swap was added and maybe Derrick Jones, John Collins and Jalen Johnson could shore up the Bulls' forwards. Would the Bulls consider temporary help at the point? Or more shooting? Maybe Shake Milton or Immanuel Quickly? Chris Duarte and Buddy Hield seem to not fit in the Pacers long term especially if they hit a dry spell.

Sam: That’s some names. With Williams on somewhat of an upswing I think he’s still relatively close to untouchable, at least for this season. Fournier’s contract is way too huge for what he does, and too much even if he did more. You hear a lot of rumors these days about Collins, and besides the awful ending for him and the Hawks against the Bulls—talk about humiliation; beaten to the ball and then getting trapped under Ayo when the Bulls piled onto him in delight—Collins is an athlete who often does too little and is paid too much for it. I suspect that’s one reason the Hawks GM is now a consultant. Isn’t Hield a Laker yet?

Alejandro Yegros: How is it that a team built on continuity that has the same personnel as the end of last year is almost the exact opposite team as last year? The defensive ranking this year has been way higher than last year, they're not getting blown out by good teams and are in every game) until the Knicks/Minnesota), but the clutch play is worse.

Sam: Which has been the question with the losses last week after the overtime body blows that had the Bulls in so many close games and finally, as you note, winning some of those tougher games. Which I believe is another reason why management wasn’t as anxious as many last week to light the fuse. Donovan has alluded to this several times, and few listened because it always sounds like just the worried coach thing. But the Bulls enjoyed a lot of miracle closes last season that generally aren’t sustainable. Not so much a law of averages, but fans don’t notice that much when fortunate things go their team’s way. As it did so often the first three months of last season for the Bulls. Not so much this season, which meant close losses until they got the wind knocked out of them with those cruel overtime defeats against the Hawks and Knicks. Perhaps they’ve regained their breath with the wins in Miami and Atlanta this week. Those were so called clutch wins.

Scott Lucas: There’s been all sorts of reports this week about issues with Zach LaVine, both in terms of teammates expressing frustration with him and him apparently not seeing “eye to eye” with management. He’s got tremendous talent but if you look at the on/off splits for various lineup combinations, LaVine is the common denominator and has a negative plus/minus pretty much no matter who else is on the floor with him. While AKME has been preaching patience, it doesn’t seem as though Lonzo is coming through that door anytime soon to play the hero and save this group. There’s talent with this group but there’s a problem with fit as it’s been playing well below expectations and I think a change of course is needed.  There’s another talented newly signed free agent in Phoenix who seems to be having similar issues to LaVine in DeAndre Ayton. I know neither can be traded now, but once newly signed free agents are able to be dealt do you think a LaVine & Vucevic swap for Ayton & Mikal Bridges would make sense? Phoenix would have an offensive juggernaut with the most athletic wings in the league, a stretch five center for maximum spacing, and true PG in Paul running the show. Bulls might lose out on star power in the deal but get two high quality, young players who are locked up for three years after this one and might fit in better with the rest of the core. I know these fan proposed trades rarely get much consideration, but I’d be interested to know your thoughts.

Sam: I’d actually prefer LaVine since DeRozan will be 34 this summer and it’s tough to see giving a guy a $100 million plus extension at that age and someone who doesn't shoot threes. Plus, he's a free agent and can walk on you after next season. Zach’s starting five guaranteed seasons. I’ve messed around with Ayton ideas because there has been so much speculation and again this week there was an apparent blowout on the bench with the coach. No way, by the way, you get Bridges. Though I don’t believe the Bulls will make any major moves, the stuff that makes sense in our speculative world is the Suns are championship short term with Chris Paul’s rapidly closing window. They have to win now while the Bulls have some time with the hope Lonzo and Zach return to full health next season and young players like Patrick Williams develop. Could you flip DeRozan and Vučević and give the Suns the scoring to take the pressure off Booker? And the Bulls take Ayton, a draft pick and Jae Crowder and salary filler? Then the Bulls recoup some draft picks and have a young core. DeRozan’s been great and provided some of the most amazing highlights the last two seasons, but is he a long term No. 1 for you if you want to aim for a title? The Raptors didn’t think so four years ago. Zach may not be, either, but he’s younger and hasn’t had the pieces around him when healthy. All questions we wonder if management is asking.

The teacher allowed 6 year old sam to continue to play in the team game.which type of care

Jon Kueper: I'm guessing you are getting a lot of questions about Zach and DeMar.  I have no idea what is really happening and am not going to speculate if anyone is upset with each other. I do think that this needs to be Zach's team as long as he is fully healthy. Last year with LaVine not being close to 100% and DeRozan having a ridiculously great shooting year, it made sense for DeMar to take over and be the alpha. Now with his shooting being a little less reliable and Zach feeling healthy, I think LaVine needs to be selfish. I don't blame him if he gets frustrated with DeRozan. Can they co-exist as 2 alphas if the Bulls are winning, sure. Otherwise, Zach is the future and I still think he will have a great 4-6 years of All Star level play, hopefully starting now.  Lavine's shot selection is not always great at times, so he does need to tighten up those decisions, especially in 4th quarter close game situations. However, DeRozan has too often tried to take over even when his game doesn't seem very sharp. Seems like Lavine is a stellar teammate. I think Donovan needs to make it clear that this is Zach's team, as Lavine has been more than accepting of allowing DeMar to take over in previous games. I'm hoping DeRozan would accept any kind of challenge Billy gives him when considering this. I don't want the Bulls to go in to tank mode as I have no positive feelings to giving up and accepting another rebuild or retooling. This team is good enough to go on a streak and it starts with Zach.

Sam: I vote Zach also, but based on my mail I don’t think we are in the majority. Billy clearly has favored DeMar, and you can understand why as DeMar has given him the best chance of winning today, which is the coach’s job. But if you are looking long term, I agree that Zach fits better in this NBA with his shot making ability from three, which opens up inside space better for a player like Vučević. Also at 27, Zach should be entering his prime while DeMar has good years left, but in the NBA calculations is moving out of his prime. He’d be great as a final piece, and if I were the Bulls 2011 I’d be doing everything I could to add him. Just that without Ball now, he may be a bit of a luxury regarding the plan for the future. I do love his game because I hate the way the NBA has gotten so three-point dominant. But with that progress thing you have to adjust or get left behind. DeMar’s value is its greatest until this trade deadline since afterward any team would just have him as a rental unless the Bulls extend him with his contact expiring after next season. He and LaVine seem to get along well enough, especially given both are family men now with children and hardly clubbing together. Both are offensive specialists. To ask them to be other is a fool’s errand. It doesn’t mean you have to choose one as the Celtics last season realized after the world said they had to between Tatum and Brown. It will be spectator sport for all of us in the next two months to see what the Bulls do.

Mike Queen: Here we go. There’s obviously plenty of this this to come: According to Chris Haynes from Bleacher Report, DeMar DeRozan could be hinting towards a trade request. He wrote, There has been tension in the locker room between Zach LaVine and DeMar DeRozan. DeRozan will also be able to sign a max extension this summer worth up to 4yrs $154M, per Haynes. Bulls could accept his trade request if they want to sell high. Then there’s this from another media, Execs believe Zach LaVine is trying to force his way to LA: LaVine wants to go to the Lakers; that has been pretty clear for a while now. The agents want him to be in Los Angeles, he is a UCLA guy and they did some rattling about his contract last offseason” Hey, the Lakers have nothing we want. I don’t want those 2027 and 2029 first rounders. And the New York Post is reporting Trae Young’s issues in Atlanta could lead to a trade request.

Sam: Aren’t Draymond Green, Ayton, Durant, Kyrie and Westbrook unhappy, too? Hey, it’s the holiday season. Everyone smile! I agree there’s not much on that Lakers roster than makes any sense for the Bulls, and I’d be wary of moving on from LaVine entering his prime and giving him some time to get that knee fully healthy. Not that I’m faulting anyone since things had deteriorated with Markkanen, but, man, is he playing great. I’ve never seen him attack the basket like he does now. I doubt DeMar makes a trade request as he doesn’t seem like that kind of guy, and he’s been nothing but grateful to the Bulls for signing him to that big contract when there were so many around the league doubting him. That’s been Karnišovas’ greatest coup with the Bulls. But DeMar has made no secret of his desire when he was a free agent to play back home in LA. He could do that after his Bulls contract expires, which is a reason for the Bulls to consider where they are going and what’s the plan. A reader sent me an interesting proposal recently of Oklahoma’s Young back home for Gilgeous-Alexander, who has been great this season. Atlanta seems primed for some big changes with an ownership that seems very unhappy about the way things have gone with the money it invested. Young is one of the most popular players in the NBA and a heck of a playmaker and shooter, as the Bulls saw Wednesday. The speculation has been he maybe pushes out the coach, but sometimes the team needs a shakeup. You are correct. Here we go. With no clear favorites in either conference, this could be one of the wildest trading periods in years.

Brodie Larsh: Do you think LaVine, Lonzo and Pat are too much, or not enough, to give up for Trae Young and John Collins? Collins is overpaid. Murray and Levine apparently have a good friendship and I remember Zach attempting to recruit him to the Bulls. Hard to gauge how much interest they'd have in Lonzo or Pat. Even though their salaries match, Levine is not enough for Trae Young straight up; maybe if we attached the Portland pick and a future 1st, but there's not a lot of those to go around. Young will probably remain an arguably top 10 player in the league for the next 5-10 years.

Sam: That’s something to think about. The Zach/Murray combo is an intriguing thought. They are close friends from back home in Washington state and I noticed watching the Hawks that Murray probably wants to play more point guard. He and Young alternate off the ball, and obviously Young controls a lot. It was the previous Bulls management in that draft, and they loved Young. They fell in that draft to No. 7 again and took Wendell Carter. But they really wanted Young, who went No. 5. I doubt they would have selected Luka, who is the star of that draft, as  there were questions around the NBA with his speed and, after all, Jokic wasn’t even a first rounder. NBA scouts so busy working their way through European five-star restaurants never do a particularly good job scouting there. I guess if the Bulls believe Lonzo isn’t coming back or not at what he was for now, which I haven’t gotten any indication about. Of course, the Hawks couldn’t risk taking Ball for the same reason. But the Hawks seemingly do want to get rid of Collins. And he actually would fit the way Donovan likes to play as a small (but bigger than Derrick Jones) center with Drummond to alternate. Maybe Zach, Vučević and White with a future pick gets it done and then you get to keep DeRozan. Ball’s big enough and shoots well enough to play off the ball and defend, and then you’ve added athleticism and amazing playmaking. Hey, we’re just spitballing here, right?

Mitch Tobin: Nikola Jokic, when asked if he likes to score or pass, has said: "Passing makes two people happy. Scoring only makes one person happy." Perhaps the Bulls should post this quote in their locker room to cut down on the internecine squabbling. More seriously, every NBA coach craves ball movement and unselfish play. Why do you think the Bulls (and other teams) struggle to achieve that ideal consistently?

Sam: Because points pay the bills. By the way, it now sounds like Jokic may be a candidate for both MVP and Coach of the Year. You wonder why with all this load management and guys supposedly needing rest why won’t they at least play a few minutes to let the fans see them? Because it affects their scoring and statistics averages. If they play 15 minutes to satisfy fans who paid to see them, like Curry or LeBron, then since the NBA publishes statistics based on average, their average falls, and presumably there’s less leverage in negotiations or for awards. Hey, you only are averaging 21 and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is averaging 24. I once had my young son with me at a lunch with a player who’s in the Hall of Fame, someone who actually was regarded as unselfish. My son asked for any advice he had about basketball. He said shoot every time you get the ball.

Mike Sutera: Finally somebody said it. Guys look like they just got off the bus the way they are dressed. I wish guys were dressed in suits if they are injured and I want my head coach in a suit as well. Charles Barkley asked Nikola Jokic about his suit: "You were fly tonight, brother. You looked good. You must got big plans after the game." Jokic: "Nah, to be honest, I started doing this because it's one way to represent yourself. And I just don't like how the guys are dressing up for games. Wearing a suit means business, it means that I’m here to do my job. That's what I represent.”

Sam: Can he compete for those awards and also be the commissioner? Jokić may now be the official voice of the fan. I know the vox populi ethos these days is casual, but they always talk about being like Mike. Well, Mike represented as well as anyone in the game, sharp, well dressed in an immaculate suit after every game even though based on what he did he could have worn torn jeans when it wasn’t high fashion. But he always said he owed a responsibility to the dignity of the game and his family and university. It’s a shame especially the way the coaches have decided to look like gym teachers. I’m not a fashionista since I still to sweater vests and saddle shoes, though ask me to do a Lindy Hop any more. But I do dress better than the coaches do to games. I know this sounds like old man get off my lawn stuff, but don’t you owe some responsibility coming to work to at least look professional in and out the door? I guess the NBA is the people’s game, but it’s sometimes funny at an airport when you see an NHL team and an NBA team get off their planes. The NBA guys often look homeless while the hockey guys look like a Catholic high school graduation ceremony. Maybe somewhere in between. I’ll wait until Jokic gives us additional guidance on the matter.

Art Alenik: Overall, the Bulls played the right way against Miami and Atlanta, defended, got the ball to Vuc in the post. My only complaint with the offense is that DeMar is still taking too many difficult shots instead of passing. He had 23 shots (Atlanta), #2 was Vuc with 17 and Zach was 3rd with 16. I was surprised to see in the box that DeMar had 5 assists because I don’t remember him passing it. He went 12-23, so I can’t complain too much. I also listened to the Bulls Talk podcast and (it was said about the problems leading to Minnesota) the team is more talented than the record and the problem is simply lack of effort, esp. on defense and it looks like they don’t care. And if they don’t care, why should I?

Sam: I’d take exception to the don’t care comments, which seem like a simplistic frustrated fan reaction to the losing. I get the angst, but if these Bulls guys didn’t care you’d see them taking off, load management, not much upset with one another. Seems like a bogus read to me since Zach plays both of back to backs when the team to start the season said he wouldn’t all season. Would have been easy to skip games. DeMar and Vooch never miss games despite heavy playing time, and seem only upset not getting back in soon enough. Defense never has been their specialties, like, you know Charles Barkley, Bird, Magic, and a lot of hall of famers more regarded for their offense. Steph Curry, Steve Nash, to name some recent ones. Donovan has been doing a good job lately mixing them in with more defensive minded role players to mitigate that issue. True DeMar does take a lot of tough shots, which makes his percentages even more remarkable, and that’s also why Donovan talks so much about pace because the Bulls don’t get enough easy baskets. But as a reader noted to me after the Hawks game, you can’t say after that last Dosunmu winning play that DeMar doesn’t pass.

Ryan Spratt: The Bulls are going nowhere this season and while I'm not ready to tear I down to the studs by moving DeRozan and LaVine it's time to make some moves. Who says no to this trade? Dragic, Caruso, and Drummond for Wiseman and Kuminga. Bulls add two talented young guys to added to the Williams and Ayo young core. Then they can spend the rest of the year letting Ball and LaVine get back to 100% while seeing what they have in the youngsters.

Sam: I’d seen rumors/speculation about Caruso for Wiseman floated. I like the idea of adding some young players with the lack of draft picks, but I seriously doubt after using those high picks on those guys that the Warriors bail out for short term veterans. Many for the last few years have been surprised the Warriors didn’t move the picks for veterans to support Curry, Green and Thompson as long as they could. With the way this season has been going for the Warriors and some decline with especially Green and Thompson, it seems more like they may be satisfied having gotten those championships and it doesn’t seem like they now are going to bank that future on a short term fix.

Michael Worth: Just as the Lakers started to get it going there went Davis again.

Sam: You have to feel badly for the guy by now. It’s easy to make jokes, but how fair is it if your body can’t handle the stress? Sometimes you see this with the big guys who’ve had the huge high school growth spurts, that they’re a guard and then they’re a center. We celebrate it and note what an advantage it is because they then have the guard skills. But we don’t take into consideration if the body can handle that. It seems not for Davis, who does try, and does get knocked down a lot. Though given the investment and the aging of LeBron, my guess is the Lakers have to ride it out with him and hope.

And for my correspondents, and everyone else, Happy Holidays and thanks always for the informed basketball conversation. It’s the best part of the job. Enjoy.
