Tier list order

On April 25, 2019 YouTuber Ian “iDubbbz” Carter posted a video ranking 19 popular fast food joints from best to worst. His fast food tier list currently has over 4.5 million views.

A flurry of popular YouTubers weighed in on the fast food debate in the days following, drawing millions of eyeballs to channels that don’t usually feature food-related videos. The same formula was replicated by Twitch streamers, which led to a ranking renaissance with online personalities rated everything from former U.S. Presidents to other YouTubers’ tier lists. But the internet’s newfound tier list obsession never would have happened if not for gamers.

The communities around competitive video games have been creating tier lists long before the ranking system went viral. Gamers use the color-coated, “Top, Mid, and Bottom Tier” format to order the strength of playable characters, and these rankings are typically based on each character’s performance at the highest level of play.

Tier lists are meant to give some semblance of order in games with enormous character rosters, like League of Legends or Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. But much like their fast food counterparts, the exact order of any gaming tier lists is ultimately subjective, making these rankings a flashpoint in the video game community.

Through the years, gamers’ obsession with tier lists bled into other forms of media but have still kept their multi-colored, unifying visual style. There are now tier lists about everything from Marvel superhero power rankings to YouTube channel TierZoo, which ranks real-life animals (it’s just as awesome as it sounds). But none of these would have ever existed if it wasn’t for fighting game fans.

The origin of tier lists

Capcom’s 1991 release of Street Fighter 2 is widely considered to have popularized one-versus-one, tournament-level video game competitions. The fighting game was first released as an arcade cabinet and then re-released on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1992, eventually selling 6.3 million copies on the early home console.

The game’s massive player base and lively competitive community began conversations about which one of SF2’s characters is objectively the best. But another decade would pass before the tier list format the internet has come to love was created.

A 2004 Urban Dictionary definition for the word “tier” used a Smash Bros. Melee example to define the ranking system, suggesting that the diehard community around Nintendo’s platform fighter had its own tier lists. However, Tekken 4 (2001) would be responsible for introducing the internet to the types of tier lists that are popular today.

The earliest tier list Inverse was able to find was posted in a Tekken resource forum by a user named Nothing in 2005, who ranked the characters of Tekken 4. While other tier lists existed prior to Nothing’s post, this was one of the earliest examples of the “Top, Mid, and Bottom Tier” format that would be used for years to come.

Tier list is as follows:
God Tier: Jin Kazama
Demigod Tier: Steve, Nina, Ling
Upper Tier: Lee, Kaz, Heihachi, Paul
Mid Tier: Christie, Bryan, Law, Bob
Everyone else is crap

Heated debates followed Nothing’s post, as other players shared their own lists and wrote out their reasoning for why their favorite character deserved to be higher on the Tekken food chain. From here onward, Nothing’s tier list format stuck and was repurposed to rank the rosters in other fighting games like Mortal Kombat series. It was eventually adapted by other genres, like the multiplayer online battle arena League of Legends (2009).

As tier lists grew in popularity and debates raged about which characters should be on top, the formulaic ranking of dozens of characters turned into a joke, especially in the Smash Bros. community. Players will throw around the phrase "tires don exits" a purposeful misspelling of the phrase "tiers don't exist." This inside joke among Nintendo fans refers to a now-deleted forum post by a Melee player that was so disgruntled by someone else's tier list that they accidentally typed "tires don exits."

The polarizing nature of tier lists led internet denizens to create parody tier lists of their favorite candy and soda brands many of which stated a purposefully unpopular opinion to anger and elicit responses from viewers. For example, one candy tier list defiantly ranked bubble gum over chocolate bar heavy-hitters like Kit-Kat and Reeses that typically top lists.

Tier lists have a tendency to rile people up and get them ranting in the comments, which is precisely why YouTubers and streamers chose to put their own spin on the more than 20-year-old gaming ritual. Now they’ve become so entrenched in popular culture that wherever there’s a strong opinion, there will probably be a tier list.

Do you know what Tier List means? Have you ever heard people making videos on YouTube or creating Tier List images? In this article, we will solve everyone's doubts regarding these lists of favorites used both in games and in anime and other areas of life.

Definition - What does Tier List mean?

The word Tier List can be translated as List of Levels. The English word Tier is often translated as a layer, row or system of levels. The purpose of these lists is to share views on best characters, but they are never 100% accurate.

These are lists with colored layers separated by Letter Ranking [S +, S, A, B, C, D, E] where a certain item or character is placed in each of the rankings in order to define the strongest or favorites .

Tier Lists exist in most competitive gaming communities, especially among fans of fighting games like Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat and Super Smash Bros. Fighting game professionals defend the Tier List, but casual players generally disagree completely with those lists.

Over the past few years, these lists have become increasingly popular, often used in a comic or personal way to describe favorite characters, Waifus and even favorite foods. Usually these lists end up creating disagreements between the community.

Tier is also considered a worldwide classification standard created especially for Data Centers by the Uptime Institute consortium, a standard accepted in more than 40 countries. It is a line or level of a structure, usually one of a series of lines placed one above the other and successively receding or decreasing in size.

Origin - How did the Tier List come about?

It is not known for sure how the Tier List came about, but it is known that one of the first lists that appeared on the internet was from the game Tekken on March 25, 2005. I believe it was already common for people to talk about their favorite characters or the best fighters of a particular game.

Four years later, on May 8, 2009, the anonymous user of 4chan posted an Idolmaster List on the Japanese forum. This started to arouse the desire to make lists of anime characters.

On May 17, the user of the Urban Dictionary Yello River defined the top layer of the Tier List as “Layer of God”. They wrote: "Skills that are almost divine".

The following year, on August 28, 2010, FunnyJunk user Scrumpulate posted a Tier List of college subjects, thus expanding its use to areas other than games and anime.

How do players view the Tier List?

Fighting game professionals often consider Tier List frequently. These lists have become popular even in FPS, MOBA shooting games like LOL and Dota, or hero games like Overwatch and Paladins.

When a competitive game receives an update, a question arises as to how changes in the game will affect the level list. This can also occur with the addition of new characters, skills or weapons in the game.

Some players often use low ranking characters on a Tier List to take advantage of certain championships. Since players are used to playing with the best on the list, others use the worst as a surprise element and master that character's skills.

Nowadays letter rankings are used a lot to create Tier List, but originally there are some divisions that are worth highlighting:

God Tier - The top of the list of levels, are usually powerful characters like Gods, in case the fans prefer not to put this type of tier in order not to compromise the game. They are usually characters who have a power far beyond others. Some are even banned from championships.

Trash Tier - As the name suggests, they are complete garbage. The worst of the worst characters, the most hated, the useless that shouldn't even exist. Usually some are pissed off to see a favorite character being played on that list.

Top Tier - Usually the strongest characters in the game, but not as powerful and abusive as the God Tiers. They are usually from the S or A Ranking in the current Tier List.

Middle tier - Those who fail to be good in some ways, fail to reach the top. They are in the middle between Ranking B and C.

Low Tier - They are characters with some serious disadvantages, different from the others that end up being left out. Usually they are below the Rank D.

Some lists use different classifications like [S +, S-, A +, A-]. Others usually put any custom word to classify the layers of a Tier List.

How to create a Tier List?

Nowadays the S + ranking is used up to any letter you want, being the S + the God Tier or Top Tier. These lists can be created both vertically and horizontally. Usually the lines follow the direction of a traditional table.

Below is an example of a Traditional Tier List:

Tier lists can be assembled on sites such as:

I usually use the first website in the list above. In it you already have all the images of a certain type of list you want to create, you can also rename the Rankings to the words you want. Others prefer to create on their own paint or text editor, some already use mobile apps.

You can make a silly list or a serious list. To make a serious list that will be used as an influence for others, it is best to know all the characters and not be partial to any of them. Sometimes you like or are used to a certain character, but you will see a popular Tier List on the internet and find him at the bottom of the ranking.
