It is said that music can change the world. It has the power to move people, change moods, heal wounds and communicate emotions non-verbally. Throughout history there have been numerous pieces of music to which this statement holds true. Classical music is one genre in particular through which great changes have taken place, with compositions often being created for significant events or personal struggles of the composers themselves. The ability of classical music to express emotion is why it remains popular today.
Classical Opera during its Golden Age
Opera has had a long history, dating back to 1600's Italy where singers would perform live beside an orchestra . Eventually instrumental accompaniment was added as well , but operas were typically performed soloists until much later when ensembles became more common . It was this era which saw the development of the opera seria , a form of opera for "serious" subjects. The word "seria" in Italian is defined as something high-born or noble, and it contrasted with light entertainment operas called "buffa." During this period women were not allowed to perform on stage so male sopranos [similar to countertenors] were cast in the women's parts.
One of the greatest composers who helped develop operatic structures to classical music was George Frideric Handel . His opera " Messiah " contains famous choruses such as Hallelujah and For unto us a child is born which remain popular today . His works often focused on religious subjects and he composed many other oratorios , including " Samson ," " Judas Maccabeus ," and " Jephtha ." These works also contain familiar choruses such as Therefore let all thine enemies perish, O my God from The Ways of Zion do we sing . In comparison Bellini 's opera Norma tells a story about a druid priestos were used to portray female roles. For both the style of singing required for opera seria and its subject matter , composers turned to French Baroque tradition where dance played an important role . This then led to the opera-ballet , in which action continued through dialogue rather than song.
Opera Seria
As opposed to church music, classical music in general was intended for the secular world. It typically told stories through lyrics and expressed human emotions, which is why it can effectively be used to share religious messages as well . However, opera seria did not always follow this path . Many composers followed French tradition by drawing their inspirations from ancient Roman texts , or even Greek mythology . These subjects were often chosen because they could be considered timeless and thus fit into a larger theme of eternal beauty. The word "seria" in Italian is defined as something high-born or noble, and it contrasted with light entertainment operas called "buffa." It was during this era that castrati singers began performing operas . They were particularly popular in Europe at one point, but died out as men eventually stopped getting castrated to sing like them. Opera also began transitioning from solely soloists [with accompaniment] to ensembles [soloists and chorus] during this time period. The Romantic era saw the rise of nationalism within music, where composers drew inspiration from their surroundings and used it to push their own boundaries . In Italy , Verdi was a pioneer of realism in opera as his works were based on history or depicted real life events . His work inspired several other Italian composers such as Puccini who also focused on topics rooted in daily life. During the early 20th century, one form of opera called zarzuela became popular in Spain . This type originated from a spoken play, sung dialogue with instrumental accompaniment, later evolving into a variety of styles.
