Is it possible to visit Forbidden City?
From November 1st to March 31st, the Forbidden City is open 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. From April 1st to October 31st, it's open 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Tickets are sold until an hour before closing. The site is closed Mondays. See the official website for further information on closures during pubic holidays.
Why is Forbidden City called Forbidden City?
It was so named because access to the area was barred to most of the subjects of the realm. Government functionaries and even the imperial family were permitted only limited access; the emperor alone could enter any section at will.
Is the Forbidden City old?
The Forbidden City was the political and ritual center of China for over 500 years. After its completion in 1420, the Forbidden City was home to 24 emperors, their families and servants during the Ming [1368–1644] and the Qing [1644–1911] dynasties.
What happened to the Forbidden City?
Since 1925, the Forbidden City has been under the charge of the Palace Museum, whose extensive collection of artwork and artifacts were built upon the imperial collections of the Ming and Qing dynasties.
