Toyota Cross 2023 USA

The multi-talented 2023 Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid combines SUV versatility, hybrid efficiency, and Toyota reliability into one affordable vehicle. We expect pricing to start at around $27,000.

Filling a perfect spot between the subcompact Toyota C-HR and the RAV4 — which is technically a compact SUV, but on the large side — the new Corolla Cross Hybrid is indeed based on the same proven platform as the Corolla compact sedan. But it has a higher ride height, an elevated driving position, all-wheel drive, and a practical SUV body.

For good measure, it should also achieve about 37 mpg on average, thanks to another Toyota specialty — a hybrid drivetrain. This is what really sets it apart from the non-hybrid Corolla Cross compact SUV, along with a few extra trim levels and cosmetic differences.

2023 Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid Pricing

Until official pricing is announced, at which point we’ll update this review, our guesstimate is the 2023 Corolla Cross Hybrid SUV range will start at around $27,000 and go up to about $35,000.

Trim levels are LE, XLE, S, SE, and XSE. There are more versions of this hybrid variant than the regular Corolla Cross.

Hybrid drivetrains are easing into the small SUV class. We expect the redesigned 2023 Kia Niro to start around $25K, but without all-wheel drive. The Hyundai Tucson Hybrid does offer AWD, but starts closer to $30K.

Before buying a new Corolla Cross Hybrid, check the KBB.com Fair Purchase Price to see what others in your area paid for theirs. It’s too soon to talk about resale values, but Toyota vehicles tend to be among the strongest performers.

Driving the 2023 Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid

Taking the regular Corolla Cross compact SUV as a basis for comparison would do this hybrid variant a disservice, because it has 25 more horsepower and probably more torque than its gasoline-only stablemate.

So until we get behind the wheel, we’ll presume the Corolla Cross Hybrid is innocent until proven boring. The S, SE, and XSE have sport-tuned suspensions, so that could be promising.

Even so, the greater Corolla range does not have a reputation for thrills. Reliability, user-friendliness, comfort, and effort-free driving are right up the Corolla’s street, though. So expect something similar, along with fuel-efficiency, in this compact SUV hybrid model.

Interior Comfort

Yes, there are the special hybrid-related graphics showing drivers how and where the energy is flowing at any given moment, but the inside of the 2023 Corolla Cross Hybrid stays within the typical Toyota boundaries of acceptable design and workable ergonomics. Most trim levels have cloth upholstery, but the XLE and XSE come with simulated leather seating surfaces.

The particular attributes of the Corolla Cross include a raised driving position, an extra couple of inches of rear headroom (compared with the sedan), and a versatile cargo area. One small disappointment is that the sedan’s rear legroom is 34.8 inches, whereas the Cross variant only has 32 inches. Still, that’s enough personal space for most occupants.

Cargo space could be sufficient compensation. Behind the rear seats is an area of 24.3 cubic feet (that’s for the regular Cross with all-wheel drive). Compare that with the sedan’s trunk space of 13.1 cubic feet. We don’t expect the extra hybrid hardware to encroach upon interior space to any detrimental degree.

Exterior Styling

There’s a bit of a scaled-down RAV4 look to the 2023 Corolla Cross Hybrid. It’s lower than the RAV4, and shorter, which could make parking easier. Yet the Corolla Cross Hybrid can still emphasize the utility in “compact sport utility vehicle.”

Toyota has also taken steps to differentiate this hybrid from its conventional counterpart. The designs at the front and rear are slightly different, 18-inch alloy wheels are available, and the SE and XSE offer 2-tone paint jobs. These involve Sonic Silver, Barcelona Red, Blush Crush Metallic or Acidic Blast (a kind of greenish gold) with a black roof.

Favorite Features

1. Hybrid power
It makes so much sense to enhance a gasoline engine with an electric motor. It provides more thrust while maximizing fuel economy. A win-win situation. Toyota has been a pioneer and then a master of hybrid systems.

2. All-wheel drive
Although the new Corolla Cross Hybrid is an SUV of sorts, it’s not made for exploring the wild country like a Jeep Wrangler, of course. Nevertheless, all-wheel drive — even in this electronic form — is a useful asset in rough weather, and every variant is fitted with it.

3. Wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto
The ability to integrate a smartphone into the infotainment system and use apps like Waze is made even better by not having to get said phone out of a pocket or purse. This is standard across the range.

4. Warranties
Hybrid components are covered by an 8-year/100,000-mile warranty and the hybrid battery has a transferable 10-year/150,000-mile warranty. As usual, the limit is whatever occurs first.

5. Integrated Streaming
A Wi-Fi subscription also brings this feature, where Apple Music and Amazon Music customers can bring their accounts into the Corolla Cross Hybrid.

6. Rear Seat Reminder
Forgetting something in the back seat can be inconvenient, or worse. If you open and close a rear door before driving off, the Corolla Cross Hybrid will remind you to check the back seat when you arrive at your destination.

Engine & Transmission

Although there’s a hybrid version of the Corolla compact sedan, it doesn’t have the same drivetrain as this Corolla Cross Hybrid compact SUV. The differences are more power in the Corolla Cross — 194 horsepower, as opposed to the sedan’s (puny) 121 — and the Corolla Cross has all-wheel drive as standard.

It’s not a conventional all-wheel drive system, though, with driveshafts, locking differentials, and so on. Instead, a dedicated electric motor turns the rear wheels.

This drivetrain is also more muscular than the gasoline-only Corolla Cross. Toyota doesn’t provide torque figures for its hybrid vehicles, but we’re going to assume it’s a healthy amount.

At the time of compiling this review, there were no fuel economy estimates from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Toyota reckons the 2023 Corolla Cross Hybrid will average around 37 mpg in combined city/highway driving.

Gasoline/electric hybrid drivetrain
194 total horsepower
EPA combined fuel economy: 37 mpg (Toyota’s estimate)

KBB Vehicle Review and Rating Methodology

Our Expert Ratings come from hours of both driving and number crunching to make sure that you choose the best car for you. We comprehensively experience and analyze every new SUV, car, truck, or minivan for sale in the U.S. and compare it to its competitors. When all that dust settles, we have our ratings.

We require new ratings every time an all-new vehicle or a new generation of an existing vehicle comes out. Additionally, we reassess those ratings when a new-generation vehicle receives a mid-cycle refresh — basically, sprucing up a car in the middle of its product cycle (typically, around the 2-3 years mark) with a minor facelift, often with updates to features and technology.

Rather than pulling random numbers out of the air or off some meaningless checklist, KBB’s editors rank a vehicle to where it belongs in its class. Before any car earns its KBB rating, it must prove itself to be better (or worse) than the other cars it’s competing against as it tries to get you to spend your money buying or leasing.

Our editors drive and live with a given vehicle. We ask all the right questions about the interior, the exterior, the engine and powertrain, the ride and handling, the features, the comfort, and of course, about the price. Does it serve the purpose for which it was built? (Whether that purpose is commuting efficiently to and from work in the city, keeping your family safe, making you feel like you’ve made it to the top — or that you’re on your way — or making you feel like you’ve finally found just the right partner for your lifestyle.)

We take each vehicle we test through the mundane — parking, lane-changing, backing up, cargo space and loading — as well as the essential — acceleration, braking, handling, interior quiet and comfort, build quality, materials quality, reliability.
