This has some nice special effects, but those are easy these days. What is not easy is story and writing and this has neither. Yes, it has a few plot elements from the original book, but in the end the outcome is the same. And it also has very poor acting and wooden characters [including the insultingly "stereotypical silly black kid"]. As a fan of the original story, and the 1953 adaptation, so much more could have been done here that would be original. And don't forget the idea in one old book of taking the Martian's machines and attacking them on their own planet. It's high time somebody made that story... even if only with the poor production values of this film.

Is War of the Worlds series worth watching?
I completed all 3 seasons and as a sci fi fan loved it. It literally has everything: smart storylines, great characters and great acting. One of the smartest sci fi series out there today. Well worth watching it and considering it's many themes about humanity.
What is the point of War of the Worlds movie?
The film was described as an anti-war film, as civilians run and only try to save themselves and their family instead of fighting back against the alien Tripods.
Why War of the Worlds is good?
Spielberg does an impeccable job directing the first half of the film, giving a lot of the first half thrills, suspense and genuine scares. Tom Cruise does a good job in the lead and Tim Robbins is eerily eccentric. As said, the first half has many great moments and is filled with unnerving suspense and scary chills.
Is BBC War of the Worlds good?
