The following software is available for installation on some College-owned computers [see the licensing info for each entry for more detail].  We are moving toward self-service installation of commonly requested software that can be done at your convenience. Microsoft’s presentation software used to create presentations using slides that can incorporate charts, images, and audio/video.

Publisher

Publisher is Microsoft’s entry-level desktop publishing application.  Adobe Indesign is the supported alternative at Middlebury as it is available for both Macs and PCs and provides a robust export feature.

Chrome

Chrome is a freeware web browser developed by Google and is used to browse web sites on the internet. Non-preferred due to issues with Webmail and other Middlebury services.  Supported only for use with Perceptive Content 7.

Firefox is a free, open source Web browser based on the Mozilla code base and offers many customization options and features.

Internet Explorer [IE]

Internet Explorer is an outdated web browser and is non-preferred due to security issues.   Certain administrative systems, such as Hyperion reporting, still require its use.  The supported way to use this web browser safely is through Remote Desktop Services [RDS].

Safari is a web browser developed by Apple and is used to browse web sites on the internet.

Web Publishing

Adobe Dreamweaver

A development tool used to create, publish, and manage websites and mobile content. This software is used infrequently at Middlebury and only for specific types of non-Drupal websites.  [Drupal and WordPress are the most common choices for website management as they are easier to use.]

Free, open source software that can be used to easily create and manage many types of websites. Most of Middlebury’s websites are created and maintained using Drupal.

Is Windows is open

Among the options, only Windows is NOT an open-source operating system. Windows is a closed source operating system marketed by Microsoft.

Is MS Word open

Microsoft Office and Adobe Photoshop are examples of proprietary software. Open source software is different. Its authors make its source code available to others who would like to view that code, copy it, learn from it, alter it, or share it.
