I've got a laptop with a new battery in it but when it won't switch on unless the power supply is connected. Any idea why?
Once it's on you can remove the power supply and it runs as normal

Have you fully charged the battery and have you had a look at how much charge it has, etc. I presume when you say it will not switch on, you cannot even get into the BIOS.
Is it an oem battery?
Sometimes you need to reset the bios.
Unplug the battery from the device wait around 5 minutes plug it back and then try.
Full charge in the battery but unless you plug in the charger, it won't start at all
How much charge is in the battery. 100 % of 0 is 0.
Also, unplug mains lead, battery and CMOS one if it has one. Press and hold down power button for a minute and at the same time press all the other buttons. After that try again.
I had a dell one like this - Power circuits /soft switch/charging circuit would only work when mains power was plugged in [and then the main power could be removed] and it ran happily on battery - left the machine to drain to nothing and then charged up battery again with the laptop "off" - all started working again....

Dell's have a problem with at least similar symptoms.
The advice is to drain the mainboard of charge. You do this by unplugging, disconnecting the battery, pressing and holding the power button on the laptop for 20 seconds.
Then reconnect the battery and test it.
This has worked for me with Dell laptops specifically in the past.
Edit to add additional,
If you end up doing this repeatedly, you should make a service call, because you probably need a new mainboard.
Is it a removable battery? If yes, you can run a troubleshoot just to make sure it is not the battery. Remove the battery, plug in the adapter then turn on the PC, wait till it turns on then power it off again. Remove the adapter, plug in the battery [remove the adapter first].. and try turning it on. If it does not start, then we have an issue with our battery.
If it turns on after plugging in the battery without the mains connected, then we may have an issue with our power circuity. You will have to go through the process of doing a power drain as stated above and check whether the issue persists. If it does, you may have to see a tech to do a diagnostic.

The issue can be in some cases resolved by leaving computer to charge for at least two days.
Will it run on battery only at all?

Hello,
My laptop doesn't turn on unless I connect it to a power supply. It says that no battery is detected. But when I click the battery icon there it says the battery is fully charged at 100 % . Please somebody reply
I am having the same issue. The battery is not removable. The battery shows 100% charged. Once it is powered on I can run it with out it being plugged in. I will try fully discharging the battery and try again
Again 100 % of 0 is nothing and so it might not hold a charge. I think in Windows 10 you can look at the details of your battery as describe here://www.groovypost.com/howto/generate-battery-report-windows-10/#:~:text=You%20can%20easily%20ge....
I've run it. It looks like the battery is good. I am able to use the laptop unplugged from the electrical source. It just doesn't start without it being plugged in.
Seems to have worked. Thanks for the help everyone.
Same issue. Did it get solved? If yes tell how
I never got it to work, sorry
