Why is my laptop screen pink and green

When your computer loses an image, a green line and grainy image appear on the screen. This is not a major problem. The green line is the result of a faulty display cable that needs to be replaced. The grainy image is the result of a faulty video card and/or bad video cables. Some of these symptoms can be very obscure, and if not corrected, the solution to the problem may remain a mystery.

The color of your monitor/display can sometimes be wrong, which is quite a noticeable problem. This is mainly due to the different colors emitted by the digital signal processing [DSP] chips in your monitor. The DSP chips are responsible for outputting the image to the monitor and generate the color signal that the monitor uses to form the video signal.

If your PC monitors or the displays connected to them are not working properly, there are several possible causes. One of the most common causes is interlaced [or partially interlaced] video, a form of video in which each frame is divided into two subframes.

What causes pink and green lines on the Windows screen/display?

The problem is most likely caused by a faulty LCD screen, but it can also be caused by the graphics adapter. If the graphics card is faulty, the screen is usually completely blank or black and the lines appear horizontally, but if the LCD logic board is faulty or the LCD is damaged in some way, the lines appear vertically.

The problem can also be caused by outdated/damaged drivers. Since there are several causes for this malfunction, it is best to solve the problem and find the exact cause by trial and error. In this guide, we have listed two common solutions to help you.

How to repair the pink and green lines on your Windows screen/display?

Utilize the display quality troubleshooter

  1. Press Windows + R, type Control Panel and press OK.
  2. Click View through in the right-hand corner and select Large Icons.
  3. Select Troubleshooting.
  4. Navigate to the left pane and click View All.
  5. Select Display Quality.
  6. Enter the password for admin or grant when prompted.

Perform a reboot

  1. Type MSConfig in the search box and press Enter.
  2. Find the Services tab and check the Hide all Microsoft services checkbox.
  3. Click the Disable All button.
  4. Click the Start tab and select Open Task Manager.
  5. Close the Task Manager and click OK.
  6. Restart your computer.

Check the display settings for the screen resolution

  1. Right-click on Start and select Control Panel.
  2. Go to Appearance and Personalization.
  3. Click the Adjust Screen Resolution button.
  4. Navigate to the Resolution section and click the drop-down list arrow.
  5. The resolution listed as recommended is your laptop’s screen resolution [the maximum resolution your monitor can support].
  6. You can adjust the brightness and contrast using the monitor controls.

Update the graphics driver

  1. Right-click on the Start button and select Device Manager.
  2. Look for graphics or video card drivers with a yellow exclamation point, question mark, down arrow, or error message.
  3. If the driver has a yellow exclamation mark, double-click it.
  4. Open Properties.
  5. On the Driver tab, select Update Driver.
  6. Restart your computer.

Frequently Asked Questions

The best way to check if your monitor or HDMI cable is the problem is to connect your computer to another working monitor and see if the pink and green lines appear on that as well. If so, the problem may be with the connecting cable or video card. However, if the lines disappear, you should replace the monitor.

  1. Remove the peripherals.
  2. Reboot the laptop.
  3. Update the graphics card.
  4. Check the temperature of the graphics processor.
  5. Delete temporary files.
  6. Reset the display settings.
  7. Reinstall applications.
  8. Replace the connection cable.

If the display is correct, you either have a faulty video cable, a faulty video cable connection on your motherboard or monitor, or a faulty LCD screen. If the display is the same as the laptop screen, you either have a GPU problem, more likely a CPU problem since they are integrated, or a motherboard problem.

  1. Turn off the monitor and then turn it back on.
  2. Check the cables.
  3. Adjust the resolution and try a different source.
  4. Calibrate the monitor.
  5. Adjust the refresh rate.
  6. Update the video card driver.

I'll be glad to help you

As I understand the Laptop screen turn pink and some become green,

No worries, as I'll be glad to help you, that said, I'll need a few more details to dissect your concern & provide an accurate solution:

Is this issue on the same computer as the one being diagnosed on this post: Click here?

Have you attempted to update the BIOS or video card drivers, recently?

If you haven't, Please try an alternate monitor to understand if this is either a hardware or a software failure,

if the issue does not appear on the alternate monitor, you may need to replace the display assembly on your computer,

if the issue appears on the alternate monitor/TV as well, re-install the graphics card drivers & update it from the official HP Website: Click here

If you don’t have an alternate monitor, I recommend checking if the issue appears on the BIOS screen [restart the computer and tap on F10 to access BIOS]

This would confirm if it's either a hardware failure or an issue with the graphics card drivers so we may reinstall and update the drivers to fix the issue as mentioned above.

If the issue persists on BIOS as well, please try with a TV to identify if it's the LCD or the motherboard/video card failure,

If the issue occurred after an accident [such as dropping it on the floor, liquid spilled on it, etc.] there could be a hardware failure and in such cases, you may need to get the computer repaired via HP [there could be a charge involved if the PC isn't covered by the accidental damage protection plan]

Reply with the result of the above-mentioned steps, for further assistance.
