Is tonights blacklist the season finale?

TVLine readers have logged their guesses about our most recent Blind Item, involving a long-running broadcast-TV drama that plans to open its new season with a significant time jump. And if you thought NBC’s The Blacklist might fit that description, you would be correct.

8 Shows We Suspect Are [Very Quietly] Entering Their Final Seasons

As TVLine can now reveal, the James Spader-led crime drama will kick off Season 9 with a two-year leap forward, picking up well after Elizabeth Keen’s sudden death via gunshot wound in the Season 8 finale. What’s more, the NBC series’ return will find the FBI task force disbanded in the wake of Liz’s murder, with their lives now changed in unexpected ways and Raymond Reddington’s whereabouts unknown.

“Finding themselves each at a crossroads, a common purpose compels them to renew their original mission: to take down dangerous, vicious and eccentric Blacklisters,” the official Season 9 synopsis reads. “In the process, they begin to uncover lethal adversaries, unimaginable conspiracies and surprising betrayals that will threaten alliances and spur vengeance for the past, led by the most devious criminal of them all – Raymond Reddington.”

The Blacklist‘s time jump comes on the heels of leading lady Megan Boone exiting the show at the end of Season 8, followed by series creator Jon Bokenkamp’s departure from the drama one day after the finale aired.

“I love this show with all of my heart, and it’s been an incredible journey, but after eight years I feel it’s time for me to step out of my comfort zone, try something new, and explore a few of the other characters and stories that have been crawling around in my head,” Bokenkamp wrote to fans at the time. “I genuinely believe the series remains full of life, creatively strong, and that bright days lie ahead.”

The Blacklist returns for its ninth — and potentially final — season on Thursday, Oct. 21 at 8/7c. In addition to Spader, returning cast members include Diego Klattenhoff as Agent Ressler, Amir Arison as Aram Mojtabai, Hisham Tawfiq as Dembe, Laura Sohn as Agent Park and Harry Lennix as Harold Cooper.

Hey, “The Blacklist” fans. We hope you guys totally enjoyed watching episode 2 tonight, especially since we have to tell you that it was indeed the very last episode for this current season 8 of The Blacklist. That’s right, guys. There will be no more episodes of The Blacklist for quite a while after tonight.

The good news is there will be some new episodes of The Blacklist at some point in time in the future because NBC did indeed renew it for a brand new season 9. According to the folks over at TV Line, the new season 9 renewal for The Blacklist actually came quite early as NBC delivered it way back in January 2021. So, there was no doubt in NBC’s mind that they wanted to keep The Blacklist on their roster of shows for 2021/2022 season.

Currently, it is unclear when season 9 of The Blacklist will premiere or how many episodes it will feature. We’ll have to wait until a later date to find out that very important information. However, we can confirm that The Blacklist is currently on NBC’s Fall 2021 schedule. So, it should show up around late September or early October 2021. I would definitely look for it to arrive around that time.

As we previously reported, Liz’s portrayer Megan Boone is quitting The Blacklist after this season 8. So, we won’t see anymore of Liz in season 9.

According to the folks over at Deadline.com, Megan had actually decided to leave the show way before the season 9 renewal announcement back in January 2021. The producers were given a lot of time to craft Liz’ exit from the show.

They also say that Megan’s exit was a mutual one between both her and the producers. Megan is already looking at other opportunities. No one from NBC or Sony Pictures had any comment on Megan Boone’s exit. How do you guys feel about Megan Boone aka Liz leaving the show? Are you happy about it? Are you sad? Or do you just not care one way or the other? Let us know in the comments section.

When the series returns next month for its season 9 premiere, it will pick up two years after Keen's death, the network revealed Thursday.

Viewers will quickly see just how big an impact Keen's death had on the show's characters. The FBI task force dedicated to taking down the world's worst criminals will have disbanded, with many of them now living very different lives.

THE BLACKLIST -- "Godwin Page [#141]" Episode 820

With the enigmatic mastermind Raymond Reddington [James Spader] in the wind, the old team will find themselves drawn together by "a common purpose" to resume their original mission of taking "down dangerous, vicious, and eccentric Blacklisters," per a new season 9 logline. That will force the team to confront deadly foes, new conspiracies, shocking betrayals, and the testing of alliances, all "led by the most devious criminal of them all — Raymond Reddington."

Boone addressed her departure when the season 8 finale aired in June. "This experience, for me, has been an entire life inside of my own life," she wrote, sharing an early-season photo of her and Spader. "These eight years playing Liz Keen have helped me better define the world and myself, as she set out to do the same. Liz sought incorruptible familial bonds, and collided with powerful forces to reveal the boundaries where a cruel, indifferent world ended and she began."

She continued: "As her story ends I am grateful, most of all for the people I shared this time with: my fellow cast members present and past, our incredible crew who carried every single day for all involved, and those of you we entertained."

"I love this show with all of my heart and it's been an incredible journey," he said in a statement posted to Twitter, "but after eight years I feel it's time for me to step out of my comfort zone, try something new, and explore a few of the other characters and stories that have been crawling around in my head."
