However, that's exactly what happened to Shelby Pagan, a 25-year-old emergency room registered nurse who survived a crash last June.
After the accident, the Boston-based nurse and blogger took to social media to share a selfie — in all her neck-braced glory — taken from what appears to be a hospital bed. Visible clouds of mascara cover her undereye area, but her cat-eye liner? Immaculate. "On Wednesday June 28th I was parked on the side of a highway, with my hazards on, calling for roadside assistance because I ran out of gas," she wrote in an Instagram post shared shortly after her accident. "While on the phone for help I was hit by a driver going 56mph. I was treated in the ER for a cervical strain, closed head injury, knee contusion and forehead lacerations." Thankfully, Shelby was fine, saying, "I consider myself lucky to have walked away from the accident relatively unhurt and alive. The reason the other driver hit me is still not known. But I have my life and am surrounded by such great friends, coworkers and family. Mahalo nui loa to the paramedics, doctors and everyone else who helped me."
Shelby's experience inspired her to write a five-star review of the liquid eyeliner on the brand's website, in which she included the same selfie seen on her Instagram. "My mascara was running down my face from crying and all other products had been wiped off in the transfer to the hospital. But not my tattoo eyeliner," she wrote. "I am posting a pick [sic] to show you, this product lasts and looks amazing through anything. Never buying any other liner again"
That review was screenshotted and reposted on Twitter by Lahari Manchikanti, a student at the University of Florida, and quickly went viral on the platform. "Y’all I was really out here looking for a new eyeliner and look at this review lmfaooo," wrote Lahari in her tweet. "She deadass took a picture in her neck brace I am deceased." Replies to Lahari's tweet ranged from, "This is the best review I have ever seen in my entire life," to "[Shelby] deserves free Trooper liner for the rest of her life 😭 @KATVONDbeauty."
"At the time I took the photo, I was actually taking it in case police needed it for evidence and to send to my mother because she lived in another state and was worried about me," Shelby told Teen Vogue. "When I was recovering, I shared it on my Instagram to share what had happened, and people repeatedly kept telling me how good my makeup looked despite being in an accident. So I decided to give credit where it was due and shared it on Kat Von D's website!"
Shelby eventually replied to the original tweet, saying, "Lololol it’s me, girl, when you find a good product, you have to share the info." However, she also had to defend herself for having taken that selfie. In another tweet, Shelby wrote, "Everyone’s hating on my review because I posted a picture of the makeup after the accident: 1. I took the photo for police evidence 2. But have you ever seen such a good eyeliner?! ....you’re welcome."
When asked if there's anything she wants to tell Kat Von D, she told Teen Vogue, "Honestly, I would thank her for making a quality makeup line that doesn’t test on animals. I switched over three or so years ago to cruelty-free make up, and Kat Von D has been a staple of mine since. It’s nice to have a product that is ethical AND works."

Is stila or kat von d eyeliner better?
So, color- and finish-wise, I prefer the stila. But, that said, the brush tip on the Kat Von D is much more precise, so I've taken to using the Kat Von D to create the wing shape and then filling it in with the stila.
How long does Kat Von D eyeliner last?
It applies easier [I like that the tip is harder vs soft; gives me more precision]. As far as product lasting goes, I use mine daily and it last 6 months but usually replace after 4 because I find it gets duller and not quite as black.
