Spotify URL autoplay

New updates are being added at the bottom of this story…….

Original story [published on November 09, 2021] follows:

Recently, Spotify received some changes on autoplay feature that modified its behavior, and are causing annoyances to many of its users.

According to reports, many Spotify users request to revert the change that made autoplay the default option for all Spotify Connect devices [1, 2, 3, 4, 5].

What is the problem with autoplay on Spotify?

Autoplay is a Spotify option that, when activated, automatically begins to play recommended songs once the user’s current album or playlist has finished.

Enabling/disabling autoplay was always optional for all Spotify-compatible platforms. However, this was recently changed, and now some platforms have the option always enabled.

This is so infuriating! I just found a new artist I like, put on his album to sleep to and woke up 7 hours later with random suggested music playing. I have auto play suggested songs turned off on my phone settings. Is it possible to stop this with Alexa speaker? It never used to, just randomly started today.

Spotify won’t stop playing suggested songs, even though Autoplay is turned off.

This has been happening to my boyfriend and yes, he has premium. It’s turned off on his phone and on the desktop version. I can’t find a solution online either, so I would love if anyone could help! It just started doing this randomly about 2-3 weeks ago, with no setting changes.

Then, from those platforms, once the user’s album or playlist has finished playing, random recommended songs will start playing.

The platforms affected by the change

Apparently, the change affects all platforms and devices compatible with Spotify, except native apps.

That is, you could only disable autoplay from Spotify app for mobile and Spotify app for desktop. Meanwhile, you won’t be able to disable it on Spotify web, compatible smart speakers and others:

TLDR: A recent change has made “autoplay” the default behavior when using Spotify Connect devices [anything other than the desktop or mobile apps]. This will happen regardless of the current active “autoplay” setting. This setting affects only the playback directly on your phone or pc/mac [apps] and does not work universally. If you would like to see an option to turn it off, then vote for this idea here:

Spotify team is aware of complaints and invites users to vote

The Spotify team confirmed the recent change. In addition, they invite users who are dissatisfied with the change to vote for reverting it [through this link].

For now, it only remains to wait for the vote to achieve sufficient participation. At that time, Spotify will consider reversing the change in autoplay behavior.

In the coming days, if there is any new development in this regard, we will update this article with the pertinent information, so stay tuned.

Update 1 [December 10]

06:33 pm [IST]: Spotify has now begun rolling out the option to turn on or off autoplay on connected devices and the Web Player via the Spotify desktop app with version 1.1.74.

While the option is currently limited to the desktop app, Spotify, in the announcement post, confirmed that it will be bringing the option to the mobile app as well with an update in the future.

Many Spotify subscribers have also taken to social platforms such as Reddit to confirm getting the new option.

In settings it says that Musicbox can automatically start playing after startup if given a URL. My goal is to get the autoplay at startup to play a specific Spotify playlist.

I’ve tried giving it an HTTP and a Spotify URI copied from the playlist in the Mac version of Spotify but no luck.
Console reports error directory of file not found [makes sense]

Is this not possible or am I missing something important

Never tried it myself but the mechanism just uses MPD commands and should be entirely possible given a URI that Mopidy understands. If I wanted to use “Billboard Hot 100” at //open.spotify.com/user/billboard.com/playlist/6UeSakyzhiEt4NB3UAd6NQ I would set the pimusicbox setting to spotify:user:billboard.com:playlist:6UeSakyzhiEt4NB3UAd6NQ

Somewhat related:

With the upcoming Mopidy-Spotify 2 + pyspotify 2, //open.spotify.com and //play.spotify.com URIs will be interpreted correctly too.

Now we just need to switch from just URI scheme matching to URI prefix matching in Mopidy for Mopidy to route these URIs to the correct backend as well

Ref. //github.com/mopidy/mopidy/issues/696.

That should work indeed. Does it, @KevinAWolfe ?

Perhaps. Pardon my naivete but is @jodal’s discussion about Mopidy-Spotify 2 + pyspotify 2 something I can implement now or is it something I need to wait for a general, stable release in order to use?

pyspotify 2.0.0b3 is out on PyPI.

Mopidy-Spotify 2 is still in development, and not useful yet. I’ll try to remember to update this thread when I push a first prerelease to PyPI.

If you want to have a closer look, development happens in the feature/pyspotify2-rewrite branch at //github.com/mopidy/mopidy-spotify/tree/feature/pyspotify2-rewrite.

Hi everyone,

i created an android app to start play spotify on headset/bluetooth device connect. Its currently in Alpa - for free. Anyone testing it would be appreciated -> //play.google.com/apps/testing/com.dasanderl.spotifyautoplay

A feature where you might pass in the playlist which should be played could be added as well, right now the app just resumes where spotify last played.

Bye, Andi

Please start a new thread instead of hijacking a 1.5y old thread.

can confirm solution from kingosticks works if you adjust settings straight on settings.ini [so not via GUI because of 40char limit]

Her Edwin2014, great catch! Where would you place the url in the settings.ini? Can’t seem to finde the line of code.

It should be the setting with the big comment describing the autoplay functionality…
i.e. autoplay = spotify:user:billboard.com:playlist:6UeSakyzhiEt4NB3UAd6NQ

Thanks, has this been tested before or is it still theory? Mine did not autoplay, maybe it has to be put inside quotes?

Edit: It worked after a reboot

Is there a similar tag as “autoplay = [something]” in modipy?? I can not find it.

It was frustrating to know that although Shortcuts gives support to Apple Music, Spotify does not have the same level of support for whatever reason, which is bad for Spotify users like me.

I just wanted to do one simple thing: Copy what Rosemary suggested on the last episode and automatically play a playlist when my wake up alarm is turned off. Unfortunately, it is not easy nor straightforward to automatically play a playlist using shortcuts. You can do it using URI schemes and play specific songs or albums [for example, spotify:track:4eVzQQ1Hx3uBBilGNlyMgQ], but it doesn’t quite work for playlists, though. It opens the app and loads the playlist. It just does not play automatically.

So, after searching for a bit, I found a workaround. It relies on using another app called Shortcutify, which I would like to recommend. I am an user, and not affiliated to this app in any way.

This app is similar to toolbox pro. It adds functionalities to Shortcut to apps like LIFX, Airtable, Google Mpas, Google Drive, Spotify and a few others. The caveat is: For most of it, it requires an API key or credentials for identifications. It is not straightforward, but after you set up you don’t have to worry about it anymore.

For Spotify: You have to download Shorcutfy, and then go to the Spotify developers dashboard and create an app to get a Client ID and Client Secret.

After getting it, you need to read the instruction on Shortcutify on how to set up the Sportify actions set. This is required because a specific callback URL should be added to the spotify app settings. If you have any trouble, go to Shortcutify -> Spotify -> Setup Instructions

And after that you are set. Now you just need to go to Shortcuts and create actions from shortcutify. One of the actions is “Spotify: Play Spotify URL”. You can pass the URL of your playlist, and select the playback device. This will send the Spotify server which device you want this to be played. For my case, it is my phone. But you might want to play on your other devices connected to your account as well.

Very neat little app
