Cycle after cycle, the Philippines has never failed to deliver fierce competition in AsNTM; however we’ve always fallen short of bagging the title. This cycle is different because for the first time, our bet was able to come through and emerge on top! Filipina-German Maureen Wroblewitz competed alongside Vietnam’s bet Minh Tu Nguyen and Malaysia’s rep Shikin Gomez in the finale.

14 hopefuls from all across Asia, 13 episodes and 3 months of anxious uncertainty of who’s still gonna be in the running to become Asia’s Next Top Model. The road wasn’t easy for Maureen (and us fans too!) as she had her low moments in front of the panel and in her stay at the model house too. But our girl is one feisty beast and only took the criticisms thrown at her to become a better model.

Maureen Wroblewitz is the first Filipina to be hailed “Asia’s Next Top Model (ANTM) Cycle 5” winner on Wednesday, June 28. Filipina-German Wroblewitz bagged the title after competing against Shikin Gomez of Malaysia and Minh Tu Nguyen of Vietnam in the finale episode. Aside from the title, the 19-year-old model will take home a Subaru Impreza, a modeling contract with Storm Model Management in London and a cover and fashion spread in Nylon Singapore.

Hours earlier, all three donned costumes that represented their country for their final shoot. Wroblewitz stunned in a sparkling white mestiza gown she accentuated with pearls.

“Before I entered the competition, I already doubted myself. I never even thought I would make it into the competition at all. But look at me now! I’ve learned so many new things. I’ve learned about different cultures, languages. I’ve learned about modeling. But I’ve mostly learned a lot about myself. I am stronger than I thought I was and I really don’t give up! I was constantly called ‘a pretty face with no skills’. But little did they know, it would just make me come out stronger and better. It became a perfect motivation for me to prove them wrong and to show them that being inexperienced doesn’t mean you’re a weak model.” Maureen posted on Instagram following her win.

This year, the Philippines sent three delegates to the competition. It initially didn’t look good for the Filipina aspirants after two of them, Anjelica Santillan and Jennica Sanchez, were eliminated on the first and third weeks of the show.

In the season, she was representing the Philippines. Despite being underestimated by fellow models for having less experience in modelling and only relying on her ‘beautiful face,’ Maureen was the first contestant to have 3 best pictures, which was the highest record of the season. After none of representative of the Philippines made the final round in Cycle 4, she revived the record and, for the first time, eventually became the first winner for her country.
