To sign in remotely, you need the right to sign in through Remote Desktop Services. By default members of the Administrators group have this right. In such cases, you will need to make sure that you remember and type the correct passwords for the Local User Accounts on your remote computer. The following suggestions show which possibilities are available ways with the question on your concerned.
1. Please aware and text the Username and Password in the Notepad. Typed input that passwords are case-sensitive and usernames are usually case-sensitive as well. After it, log in to the remote computer.
2. However, as it happens with many users, it is possible to Reset the Local User Account Password in Windows 10, even if you do not remember the current user account password for these accounts. In order to change Passwords in Windows 10 using the control panel, you need to be logged into your Admin Account or any user account with Admin privileges. This will allow you to Change Password for all the User Accounts on your computer. You could reset your password with the OSK (On-Screen Keyboard), follow these steps:
• Click Start.
• Type osk and hit enter to open the on-screen keyboard.
• If this doesn’t work, press Windows+R to open your Run Command window. Type osk and click OK.
• Press and Hold CTRL-ALT keys on your physical keyboard and then click on the DEL key in the virtual keyboard (on-screen).
• Minimize the OSK.
• Click Change a password.

Hi all, I have a problem with 2 PC’s both running Win 10 Pro x64.

Let’s call them Tower & Laptop.

The issue is with remote desktop connections, & shared folder access.

I have a peer to peer network which has been running fine for several years.Due to the imminent end of life of Win7, I have started moving over to Win10.

My “office” computer is moved fine as is my wife’s.They are both running Win 10 Pro x64.I can connect to my wife’s computer with remote desktop OK & vice versa.

I have just updated my laptop and that is where the issue is.

I can connect by remote desktop, from the laptop to the tower OK.

I cannot connect from the tower to the laptop.

They are both on the same network and IP pool, they are both visible on the network, and, I can ping one from the other, by IP address & computer name. They can both access the same network shares.

I have set a share up on the local disk of each and shared with “everyone”.When I try to access the laptop share from the tower I cannot as it rejects the username &/or password combination, just like it does in Remote Desktop.

When I try and access the tower share from the laptop it will work with the truncated local user name “short username”, & my Microsoft account password.

I can log into my Microsoft account online OK with the password, & it is definitely right as it is copied and pasted.

It seems to be a configuration issue on the laptop, but I cannot find it.

Remote connections are enabled as is sharing, both computers have the network connections set to private. As the laptop can access the tower, I have copied as many of the settings as possible, but still no joy.

It seems to be a mis match in credentials or settings with regard to the user account on the laptop? However, I cannot find this.

I have deleted all credentials from Credential Manager and they have been re-created automatically.

I know the password is correct as I have checked by logging into my Microsoft account online with it.

I have tried various combinations of username, from:

    “short username”, “laptop\short username”, “laptop\firstname.lastname”, “laptop\”, “MicrosoftAccount\short username”, “MicrosoftAccount\”

Where “short username” is the name of the local user directory, i.e. the first 5 letters of the Microsoft account name & firstname.lastname is the name used in the Microsoft account.

This is not my first foray into remote desktop, and prior to wiping the laptop to install Win10 it was working fine with the tower machine remote controlling it, so it’s a software issue with Windows somewhere, I also have another Win7Prox64 machine yet to be updated & a Win10ProX64 machine which I can connect to from the tower, so the tower seems to be OK.

Following a suggestion, I have created a local machine admin account on the Laptop and I can connect remotely with this log in, but not to the account linked to my Microsoft account.

I would like to use this because it allows me easier file sharing etc.

    Any suggestions gratefully accepted.

    Many thanks in advance,

    Paul

    HI

    shortname:
    microsoft account:

"I have just updated my laptop and that is where the issue is."
1 can you explain how did you update your laptop ,did you install windows update or update hardware driver on your laptop ?
2 "It seems to be a mis match in credentials or settings with regard to the user account on the laptop?"
can you logon the laptop by using your microsoft account locally(like )?
after you logon your laptop successfully by using your microsoft account ,if you remote access laptop from
your tower and still using your microsoft account ,is there any new error information ?

3 "and prior to wiping the laptop to install Win10 it was working fine with the tower machine remote controlling it,"
did you mean in the past ,you have the same problem and you clean installed win10 pro x64 for your laptop ,then the same problem has been solved ?

4"I have created a local machine admin account on the Laptop and I can connect remotely with this log in, but not to the account linked to my Microsoft account."
I think the current problem is from your microsoft credentials.
how many device are using your microsoft account ? are both tower and latop have same normal state in below website?
(if you sign in https://account.microsoft.com/?refd=cn.bing.com ,can you check it ?)

5 if you use ip address of laptop in remote desktop connection ,will the problem persist ?
6 are tower and latop in the same workgroup ?

    Best Regards

    Hi,

Sorry for my delay in replying, I didn't get a notification that there was a reply to my thread.

In answering your questions in order.

    1. The update was from Windows 7 Pro x64 to Windows 10 Pro x64. This was done by completely wiping the disk on the laptop, re-partitioning and installing a fresh set up of Win10. (See also answer below).

    2. I can use the laptop locally fine, I can log on with my Microsoft account when the laptop is connected to the local network and thus the internet. If I disconnect the network then I can log into the laptop with my Microsoft account OK, however, I obviously cannot connect to it remotely, as it does not have any LAN or WAN connection, it is disconnected from any network and running stand alone, but, I can log in, and access all local machine resources fine.

    3. I wiped the laptop to install Windows 10 as I did not want any carry over of any potential software issues with doing an in-situ upgrade. I was able to remote control the laptop from the Tower fine when the laptop was running Win7.

    4. I agree that it seems to be linked to my Microsoft credentials. I can sign in to the link above fine on the tower machine, and laptop, it shows both machines linked to my Microsoft credentials. I can even view the hard disk space on each from the website link provided. The only "error" is "status unknown" against the category "Device performance & health" for both machines.

I can also sign in with a local computer account not linked to Microsoft Credentials and remote control the laptop from the tower with that account.

There are only two devices listed in your link as being associated with my Microsoft credentials, my tower and my laptop.

    5. Yes I still get the issue using the IP address of the laptop rather than the computer name.

    6. Yes both are in the same workgroup, and the same IP pool (with appropriate subnet mask).

I am going to add another user with a Microsoft account to access my laptop, and then see if I can use that account to remote control the laptop from the desktop.

    OK,

So, I added my wife to our Microsoft family.

I got her to accept the invitation.

I added her to the laptop as a user.

I got her to log in to the laptop and let the machine set up the account settings.

I then tried to log into the laptop with her Microsoft Account credentials which are saved on my tower machine this would not work, and refuses the password also.

I do have my wife's permission to try all this by the way.

I logged her out of the laptop and tried to log into her desktop computer with her Microsoft Account, and that is now refusing the password also!

So, in adding my wife to my Microsoft family and as a user on the laptop, this has broken the remote desktop log in to a completely different computer!

It just gets worse! In trying this I have now lost access from my tower to my wife's desktop computer!

However, I can still connect to my Tower, my wife's laptop & her desktop machine FROM the laptop using my Microsoft account to connect to my tower machine, her Microsoft account to connect to her desktop and her local machine account to connect to her Win7 laptop.

I have access to her computers on her account so if I am working away from home which I do regularly I can log in as her and help her with user issues and things, so I see exactly what she sees, it's all above board as far as she is concerned, I am not accessing her computer without her permission or anything like that.

I have just tried on my wife's desktop computer to log into my tower with my Microsoft account, all OK. I have just tried to log into my laptop from my wife's desktop machine and I cannot.

One thing that I have noticed is that when I try to log in to the laptop, it deletes the saved user account password & I have to re-enter it and save the user account again in the Remote Desktop app.

If I block log in to the laptop on my wife's account, I do not regain remote control of her desktop computer.

The next thing to try was to remove my wife from the Microsoft family. This removed her from the family list on the laptop. However, I still can no longer access her desktop computer.

    HI

7 can you enter winver in command prompt on your wife's desktop and laptop then look the os version and os version number ?[for example windows 10 enterprise 1809 (os build 17763.316)]

8 I'm losing myself in your case. did you mean you can remote access from your laptop to your tower by using your microsoft account successfully ,but you can not remote access from your tower to your laptop by using your microsoft account ?
did you try to disable NLA for rdp on laptop like picture, then try again?

9 "I have just tried on my wife's desktop computer to log into my tower with my Microsoft account, all OK. I have just tried to log into my laptop from my wife's desktop machine and I cannot."
is there the difference settings or local policy about your latop and desktop ?

10 I find below thread ,i hope it can help you.

I am working my way through the suggestions, sorry for my delay, I have been working away from base.

It is definitely NOT the first suggestions from here:

    https://www.thewindowsclub.com/your-credentials-did-not-work-in-remote-desktop-on-windows-10

The network is private, and the account name is not carried over from an upgrade as the hard disk was wiped.

The OS on my wife's desktop machine is Win10 Pro x64, ver 1903 build 18362.418.

In doing diagnostic tests to try and identify the problem I added my wife as a user to my laptop.

I then tried to access her account on my laptop from her desktop.

    It would not work.

Originally I could access my wife's desktop form my tower, since adding her account to the laptop and trying to connect to my laptop from her desktop, when I tried to access her desktop from my tower, the connection was refused.

Since removing my wife from our "Microsoft Family" and removing her account from my laptop, I can now access her desktop again from my tower.

However, I want to work on one thing at a time, there does seem to be something linked to Microsoft Credentials here though.

I want to concentrate first on gaining remote control of my Laptop from my Tower using the same Microsoft Account Credentials on both, so I can synchronise them together as much as possible, which after all is one of the benefits of the Microsoft Account and the OneDrive etc.

I will work through the other suggestions and report back my findings as soon as I can, I am working away again next week though, so will have little chance to do much.

Nope I've still not managed to find a fix, I have a few days off work and won't need my laptop, so I may wipe it and re-install Win10, trying the remote access after every program install to see what kills it.

TBH, my experience is that it will just work 2nd time round after taking hours of my time to sort it out, and no real reason will ever be found.

Once I have tried somethings and got it working I will update this thread.

How to fix Remote Desktop incorrect password on Windows 10

Remote Desktop username and password incorrect Windows 10

On Windows 10 (or Windows 11), if you try to connect to a remote computer that has remote desktop enabled and configured, you will probably get an incorrect password error.

If this is the case, you are not the only one. It appears that the problem lies in how you have initially set up the Windows account. For example, if you are using a Microsoft account and two-factor authentication is enabled, it seems that the system doesn’t store the authentication token, which is then used to authenticate remotely.

The solution to this problem is to sign in at least once with the local password to cache the access token that is then used for logging in remotely.

In this guide, you will learn the steps to fix the password problem when trying to connect remotely to a Windows 10 computer. These steps should also work on Windows 11.

How to fix password issues with remote connections on Windows 10

Remote Desktop username and password incorrect Windows 10

On Windows 10, if you’re trying to connect to a computer using the remote desktop app or access a network shared, and you get an incorrect password error message, or you simply can’t connect, it could be a lot of reasons for this problem, but it’s most like that this is an account problem and not a connection issue.

If this is the case, switching to a local account and the back to a Microsoft account could be the fix for the issue.

In this guide, you’ll learn the steps to resolve the account problem that may be preventing you from accessing a computer or network folder remotely on Windows 10.

Why I Get "The Username Or Password Is Incorrect" Error?

Before you go ahead and apply the fixes to possibly fix the username or password is incorrect Windows 7 error on your computer, you might be interested in learning why you are getting the error in the first place.

As mentioned earlier, there could be various reasons responsible for the issue on your computer. Sometimes, the error occurs right after you have installed an update on your Windows computer. Even though you do not enter any username or password, your computer keeps on throwing the same error message on your screen.

If you find yourself in that situation, you can actually click on the OK button to be taken to the login screen. Then you can enter your actual username and password to log-in to your computer. It should let you successfully log-in to your account on your machine.

Remote Desktop username and password incorrect Windows 10

Method 1. Disable Automatic Sign-In For Device Setup

One of the reasons the issue occurs is because you have a certain user account set up to set up the machine after it is updated. You can actually disable this feature so your computer does not automatically use your account details for the setup procedure.

  • Launch the Settings app from the Start Menu on your computer. Click on Accounts on the following screen to manage your account settings.

Remote Desktop username and password incorrect Windows 10
  • Choose Sign-in options from the left sidebar to view your available sign-in options.
  • Scroll all the way down until you see the section that says Privacy. Beneath this section, you will have an option that says Use my sign-in info to automatically finish setting up my device and reopen my apps after an update or restart. Disable this option.

Your computer will no longer try to configure itself with your user account. As a result, you will not get the aforesaid error on your machine.
