Câu gián tiếp là chủ đề vô cùng quan trọng trong chương trình học tiếng Anh của chúng ta. Tuy đây không phải một bài học khó nhưng lại khá phức tạp và dễ gây nhầm lẫn với người học. 1. Ôn tập lý thuyết về câu gián tiếp trong tiếng Anh

1.1. Câu gián tiếp là gì?

Câu gián tiếp (Reported Speech) là kiểu câu được dùng để thuật lại ý chính mà người khác đã nói, không sử dụng dấu ngoặc kép và có sự thay đổi về thì, chủ ngữ tân ngữ và trạng từ về thời gian, địa điểm trong câu.

Công thức: Mệnh đề tường thuật + (that) + mệnh đề được tường thuật.

Ví dụ. My mother said she had made a delicious cake. (Mẹ tôi nói rằng bà ấy vừa làm một chiếc bánh rất ngon.)

1.2. Quy tắc chuyển câu trực tiếp sang câu gián tiếp

Để chuyển câu trực tiếp sang câu gián tiếp ta cần lưu ý 3 điều sau: lùi thì, chủ ngữ-tân ngữ và trạng từ chỉ thời gian nơi chốn. Hãy cùng xem lại cách chuyển đổi của 3 điểm trên nhé.

1.2.1. Quy tắc lùi thì của động từ trong câu

Các thì ở hiện tại sẽ được lùi thì trong câu gián tiếp:

• Hiện tại đơn => Quá khứ đơn
• Hiện tại tiếp diễn => Quá khứ tiếp diễn
• Hiện tại hoàn thành => Quá khứ hoàn thành
• Hiện tại hoàn thành tiếp diễn => Quá khứ hoàn thành tiếp diễn
• Quá khứ đơn => Quá khứ hoàn thành
• Quá khứ tiếp diễn => Quá khứ hoàn thành tiếp diễn
• Quá khứ hoàn thành => Quá khứ hoàn thành
• Quá khứ hoàn thành tiếp diễn => Quá khứ hoàn thành tiếp diễn
• Tương lai đơn => Tương lai đơn trong quá khứ (would)
• Tương lai gần => was/ were going to V
• Tương lai tiếp diễn => Tương lai tiếp diễn trong quá khứ (would be Ving)
• Tương lai hoàn thành => Tương lai hoàn thành trong quá khứ (would have PII)
• Tương lai hoàn thành tiếp diễn => Tương lai hoàn thành tiếp diễn trong quá khứ (would have been Ving)
• Shall/ Can/ May => Should/ Could/ May
• Should/ Could/ Might/ Must/ Would => Giữ nguyên

Lưu ý: Các trường hợp sau không cần lùi thì trong câu gián tiếp

• Khi chuyển từ câu trực tiếp sang câu gián tiếp, nếu động từ tường thuật được chia ở thì hiện tại đơn thì động từ chính và các trạng từ chỉ nơi chốn/ thời gian được giữ nguyên, không thay đổi.

Ví dụ. My mother says: “I’m going shopping.” (Mẹ tôi bảo: “Mẹ đang đi mua sắm.”)

\=> My mother says she is going shopping.

• Khi diễn tả một sự thật hiển nhiên đã được chứng minh, công nhận.

Ví dụ. Hana said: “The sun rises in the East.” (Hana nói: “Mặt trời mọc ở hướng Đông.”)

\=> Han said that the Sun rises in the East.

• Một số trường hợp không thể lùi thì khi chuyển sang câu gián tiếp: Câu điều kiện loại 2 và loại 3

Ví dụ. “If I were you, I would not drop out the school.” She said. ( Cô ấy nói: “Nếu tôi là bạn, tôi sẽ không nghỉ học giữa chừng” .)

\=> She said that if she were me, she would not drop out.

• Cấu trúc Wish + quá khứ đơn/ quá khứ hoàn thành

Ví dụ. “I wished I joined the meeting.” he said. (Anh ấy nói: “Tôi từng ước mình đã tham gia buổi họp đó”.)

\=> He said he wished he joined the meeting.

• Cấu trúc “It’s time somebody did something”

VÍ dụ. “It’s time you finished your homework.” His father said. (Bố anh ấy nói:”Đax đến lúc cô phải hoàn thành bài tập về nhà của mình”.)

\=> His father said it was time he finished his homework.

1.2.2. Quy tắc đổi ngôi và tân ngữ

Các đại từ nhân xưng, tính từ sở hữu, đại từ sở hữu và tân ngữ sẽ thay đổi như sau khi chuyển câu trực tiếp sang gián tiếp.

• I => He, she
• You => I, he, she, they (số nhiều)
• We => They
• My => His, her
• Me => Him, her
• Mine => His, hers
• Our => Their
• Yours => His, her, my, their
• Us =>Them
• Myself => Himself, herself
• Yourself =>Himself, herself, myself
• Ourselves => Themselves

1.2.3. Quy tắc đổi trạng từ chỉ thời gian và nơi chốn

Trong câu gián tiếp, sự việc không xảy ra tại thời điểm hay địa điểm mà người nói tường thuật lại. Vì vậy, khi chuyển từ câu trực tiếp sang câu gián tiếp, cần chú ý đổi trạng từ chỉ thời gian, nơi chốn.

• Here => There
• Now => Then
• Yesterday => The day before
• Tomorrow => The day after
• Today/ tonight => That day/ that night
• Ago => Before
• Next => The following
• Last => The previous
• This => That
• These => Those

1.3. Cách chuyển các kiểu câu sang câu gián tiếp

1.3.1. Câu kể

• Công thức: S + say(s)/ said (that) + Mệnh đề được tường thuật

Ví dụ. “I’m going to graduate from university next year”, she said. (Cô ấy nói rằng:”Tôi sẽ tốt nghiệp đại học vào năm tới”.)

⇒ She said that she was going to graduate from university the following year.

1.3.2. Câu nghi vấn

Với câu hỏi, ta có thể sử dụng các động từ sau: ask, wonder, want to know

• Câu hỏi dạng Yes/ No

Khi chuyển từ câu trực tiếp sang câu gián tiếp với câu gián tiếp dạng yes/ no, ta cần chú ý:

• Thêm if hoặc whether trước câu hỏi
• Thay đổi vị trí của chủ ngữ và động từ trong câu
• Công thức: S + asked/ wondered/ wanted to know + if/ whether + S +V…

Ví dụ. “Are you tired?” My sister asked. (Chị tôi hỏi rằng: “Em đang mệt à”)

\=> My sister asked if I was tired.

• Câu hỏi có từ để hỏi WH-question
• Công thức: S + asked/ wondered/ wanted to know + WH + S +V…

Ví dụ. “What time is it?” Anna asked. (Anna hỏi: “Mấy giờ rồi vậy?)

\=> Anna asked what time it was.

1.3.3. Câu mệnh lệnh, yêu cầu

Khi yêu cầu một điều gì với ai đó, trong câu gián tiếp sẽ sử dụng các động từ sau: ask/ tell/ require/ request/ demand,…

Với câu ra lệnh yêu cầu bắt buộc sẽ được nhấn mạnh với động từ order.

• Công thức chung cho mệnh lệnh gián tiếp
• S + ask/ tell/ require/ request/ demand + O +(not) + to V…
• S + order + somebody + to do something

Ví dụ. “Open the window, please”, he said. (Anh ấy nói: “Làm ơn mở cửa sổ ra”.)

\=> He told me to open the window. (Anh ấy bảo tôi mở cửa sổ.)

1.3.4. Một số dạng câu đặc biệt của câu gián tiếp

Bên cạnh 3 dạng câu chính ở trên, còn có một số trường hợp đặc biệt của câu gián tiếp như sau:

• Shall/ would được dùng trong câu đề nghị, lời mời

Ví dụ. “Shall I give you a cup of tea?” Khanh asked. (Khánh hỏi rằng:”Tôi có thể lấy giúp bạn một tách trà được không?”)

⇒ Khanh offered to give me a cup of tea. (Khánh đề nghị lấy giúp tôi một tách trà.)

• Will/ would/ can/could được dùng để diễn tả yêu cầu lịch sự

Ví dụ. John asked me: “Can you open the window for me?” (John hỏi tôi: “Bạn có thể mở cửa sổ ra cho mình được không?”)

⇒ John asked me to open the window for him. (John nhờ tôi mở cửa sổ ra cho anh ấy.)

• Câu cảm thán

Ví dụ. “What an interesting film!” She said. (Cô ấy thốt lên:”Thật là một bộ phim thú vị.”)

\=> She exclaimed that the film was interesting. (Cô ấy thừa nhận rằng bộ phim này rất thú vị.)
