Intel Socket G1

The Intel Core i7-720QM was a mobile processor with 4 cores, launched in September 2009, at an MSRP of $364. It is part of the Core i7 lineup, using the Clarksfield architecture with Socket G1. Thanks to Intel Hyper-Threading the core-count is effectively doubled, to 8 threads. Core i7-720QM has 6 MB of L3 cache and operates at 1600 MHz by default, but can boost up to 2.8 GHz, depending on the workload. Intel is building the Core i7-720QM on a 45 nm production process using 774 million transistors. The multiplier is locked on Core i7-720QM, which limits its overclocking capabilities. With a TDP of 45 W, the Core i7-720QM consumes typical power levels for a modern PC. Intel's processor supports DDR3 memory with a dual-channel interface. The highest officially supported memory speed is 1333 MT/s, but with overclocking (and the right memory modules) you can go even higher. For communication with other components in the computer, Core i7-720QM uses a PCI-Express Gen 2 connection. This processor features the None integrated graphics solution. Hardware virtualization is available on the Core i7-720QM, which greatly improves virtual machine performance. Additionally, IOMMU virtualization (PCI passthrough) is supported, so that guest virtual machines may directly use host hardware.

Compatibility

Information on Core i7-720QM compatibility with other computer components and devices: motherboard (look for socket type), power supply unit (look for power consumption) etc. Useful when planning a future computer configuration or upgrading an existing one. Note that power consumption of some processors can well exceed their nominal TDP, even without overclocking. Some can even double their declared thermals given that the motherboard allows to tune the CPU power parameters.
