With all first signature shoes that was released from Nike, there’s usually a very simple design with minimal tech. In terms of appearance, the upper and materials does look simple. However, that swoosh placement gives it the slightest edge over recent first signature release, the Nike Kyrie 1.

As for tech, it’s more than the usual, but not the most orthodox implementation. The Nike Zoom Freak 1 features two Zoom Units but they are placed at the heel, double-stacked. There is no tech at the forefoot and that’s just something that really intrigues me. I don’t even know how it would perform, especially the heel-to-toe transition. The storytelling traction pattern is also an interesting part to look at.

Significant Tech Present in the Shoe:

  • Mesh & Fuse Upper
  • Double-Stacked Heel Zoom

Materials & Aesthetics (8/10):

Like all initial signature models release by Nike, the materials and overall appearance of the Nike Zoom Freak 1 will not turn heads. The materials are mainly like the Nike Kyrie 1, mostly Mesh and Fuse. The only distinctive feature I would say, would be the Swoosh placement which is big and in the opposite direction. It’s not super impressive, but I would say that it is a better start than the Kyries.

Although Nike and Giannis try their best to mix it up in terms of colours and materials, it is still really hard to see this as a shoe you can rock off the court. On the court though, the Nike Zoom Freak 1 is being worn by Giannis Antetokoumnpo (Milwaukee Bucks) himself, and many other players around the league. The other two Antetoukoumnpo brothers, Tyler Herro (Miami Heat), Jalen Brunson (Dallas Mavericks) and DeAaron Fox (Sacramento Kings) are just some of the many names.

Fit (9/10):

If you thought that the shoe looked a little slim, you are not wrong. The Nike Zoom Freak 1 does fit true-to-size in general but it is kind of snug in my opinion. To be safe, especially if you have wide feet, you might want to try them on first before purchase. On a good note, the snug fit does break in a little after some time.

Lockdown was on point, not just because of the snug fit but also due to several features that may many may not even notice. The Freak 1 has “Webs” at the forefoot that works with the lacing to hold your mid and forefoot in place. There is also sculpted padding in the ankle and heel area that brings about the heel and ankle security. On top of that, lateral containment is achieved with the midsole wrapping up the sides of the shoes.

Support (9/10):

With such a secure fit, a large part of the Nike Zoom Freak 1’s support is already covered. All that containment made sure that you will not be moving with any hindrance from the shoes. Not only does the midsole provide lateral containment, it also gives the user lateral support.

Some might find it concerning that there is no shank plate in the Freak 1 but that is somehow overcame by the flat and wide base. This helps to reduce instability to some extent.

Cushioning (8.5/10):

Talk about a weird way to manage resources. Usually, if a shoe has Zoom in one area, it’s usually the forefoot. Not only that, if a shoe were to feature TWO Zoom Units, chances are one unit is placed in the heel and the other at the forefoot. I don’t know if it’s the name of the shoe or the athlete himself, but the Nike Zoom Freak 1 is a freak as well, featuring Double-Stacked Zoom Units at the heel and regular foam cushioning at the forefoot.

Surprisingly enough, it was fine! I was skeptical about the heel-to-toe transition seeing that the Double-Stacked Heel Zoom could make the heel more elevated or feel disconnected with the forefoot but that is not the case at all.

There is a lot of court feel at the forefoot but impact protection is minimal. The reason why this is a little unorthodox is because most people tend to land on their forefoot. I was find playing in these but it may not be suited for all types of players

Traction (8.5/10):

The Storytelling Traction pattern on the Nike Zoom Freak 1, is split into two portions. There is a rose-like pattern, usually translucent rubber, and a maze-like pattern, usually solid rubber and reminds me a lot of the Nike Run the One from many years back.

Not only is the combination intriguing, the coverage of the traction pattern is as well. The coverage of the traction seemed to be always inconsistent. On a certain day, the shoe might perform well at a court and then the next day, you play on the same court and it’s just not the same. I would say that a possible reason could be the mixture of the different rubbers.

On top of all that, the groves are pretty thin so I would not recommend hooping in them outdoors

Final Conclusion: (8.6/10)

Overall, it is a pretty decent shoe. For a first signature shoe? I would say it’s better than expected. It is a solid option with great support and fit that can be brought forward to future models. Of course. The materials, cushioning and traction looks to be improved. Rest assured, I’m positive that greater things are coming!
