HE BECAME an Internet celebrity practically overnight for his impassioned on-camera interview defending his sister, and now Antoine Dodson is bringing his fists to Philadelphia. Show
You probably remember him from the "Bed Intruder Song," a YouTube video that went viral a few years ago after the musical group The Gregory Brothers got a hold of Dodson, auto-tuned his TV news interview and turned it into one of the catchiest jingles on the Internet, with more than 126 million views to date. The song eventually reached No. 89 on Billboard's Hot 100 list, and Dodson told me yesterday that it's now reached platinum status in iTunes digital downloads. "I can't walk to the store without people stopping and asking me for autographs," he said. "A two-minute trip turns into a two-hour trip. But you can't turn down your fans!" Dodson is casting a wide net to find a boxing opponent for a match in Philly slated for early summer. Celebrity boxing recruiter Damon Feldman is pairing up with Dodson to find a proper fighter. Qualifiers have to be between 160 and 250 pounds and be able to go half-minute rounds. No experience necessary. Winner gets $1,000, said Feldman (and an epic story to tell). Dodson actually got to fight his sister's bedroom intruder last year in a Los Angeles boxing ring, where he emerged the champion. "It was built up for so long," Dodson told me. "We settled it in the ring," though Dodson said that his sister's assailant was never prosecuted. "Boxing is therapeutic for me. I get to release stress . . . You may be bigger than me, but the bigger you are, the harder you fall." The young man, now 28, was 23 at the time his sister was accosted in her Huntsville, Ala., housing project by an unknown male who she claims climbed into her bedroom window and attempted to rape her. Dodson said that his dream boxing match would be between himself and Justin Beiber, who was training with Floyd Mayweather in November. The “man on the street” approach rarely offers any real insight or information to a story, but on one occasion, a man talking to the camera about a home intruder became bigger than the story. 3) Either way, Rashaad Cooper was never charged for itDodson’s sister knew Cooper was the man who hopped out her window, but despite Dodson’s claim of “we gonna find you” and the promise that he left fingerprints, neither Kelly nor Antoine ever identified Cooper to the police. And police never found a reason to bring Cooper in. They thought the Dodson interview would make for a good auto-tune remix, but weren’t sure at first if the topic itself were a little too sensitive to joke about. Gregory Brothers’ drummer Michael Gregory admitted in a 2010 interview that he originally questioned the appropriateness of turning such an awful situation into a musical parody, but then realized, “it’s taking a terrible situation and making at least something positive out of it.” 7) The “Bed Intruder Song” cracked Billboard‘s Hot 100 listThe song reached No. 89 on Billboard’s Hot 100 list and, according to the Gregory Brothers, by September of 2010, they had sold more than 250,000 copies on iTunes. Besides references on top shows like The Cleveland Show and a cameo in the Tyler Perry movie A Madea Christmas, Dodson himself appeared on Tosh.0 for a Web Redemption segment and was also featured in a segment on Lopez Tonight.
