F1 2023 South Africa tickets

Formula 1 boss Stefano Domenicali recently got a few engines revving in Mzansi after he told Sky Sports that South Africa is being lined-up as a potential new venue on an extended race calendar, while superstar Lewis Hamilton has repeatedly endorsed such a plan.

TRACK TALK: SOUTH AFRICA TO FORMALLY BE ADDED TO FORMULA 1 CALENDAR

South Africa hasn’t hosted a Formula One grand prix since 1993, an incredible 29 years ago this season.

Famed South African formula one guru Sasha Martinengo has highlighted the fact that reports broke overnight on Monday to suggest that Kyalami is CONFIRMED for 2023, with Formula 1 and DHL having apparently signed a five-year contract.

Should this be officially announced in the coming days, one of the first questions will undoubtedly revolve around how much tickets might cost.

Interestingly, an F1 ‘insider’ has suggested that the minimum price could be around R3000, ranging through to R5000 and beyond. It now remains to be seen whether this could be confirmed, and what the reaction would be from motorsport fans, who will have to dig deep into their pockets to see the likes of Charles Leclerc, Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton in action.

Interest in Formula One has skyrocketed recently and the increased demand among audiences may force organisers to put more dates in the diary for upcoming seasons.

Domenicali said that a 30-race calendar could be considered for 2023 and beyond and those running the show are looking to add races in new regions and countries.

A street venue in Las Vegas has already been confirmed as a new venue, while more races in China have been touted.

Furthermore, the Kyalami circuit in Johannesburg remains the obvious choice as South Africa’s track circuit.

The 2022 season will comprise 22 races, down from the original 23 stops after the Russian Grand Prix was scrapped following that country’s invasion of neighbours Ukraine.

Watch below as Hamilton calls for South Africa to be added to the Formula 1 calendar:

The 1993 South African Grand Prix was held at Kyalami on 14 March 1993. It was the 33rd South African Grand Prix – and remains the most recent to have been staged on the African continent.

It was the first race of the 1993 F1 season and was contested over 72 laps.

The race was won from pole position by French legend Alain Prost driving a Williams-Renault.

Prost’s great rival, Brazilian Ayrton Senna, finished second in a McLaren-Ford, with Great Britain’s Mark Blundell in a Ligier-Renault rounding out the podium.

Incredibly, of the 26 starters, only five finished the race, although seven were classified.

Runner-up Senna was the only driver that winner Prost did not lap – surely an all-time Formula One record!

Formula 1 (F1) may be making its way to South Africa for the first time in 30 years.

It was reported in June that F1 was working towards a deal to see South Africa rejoin the international race calendar in time for 2023.

Following this, the latest rumours suggest that plans are being finalized for the country to take the stage as part of next year’s race series.

F1sasha, a prominent media figure in the local motoring scene, tweetedthis morning that DHL and F1 have signed a five-year contract.

This deal with DHL, according to F1sasha, will likely mean that the logistics company will shuttle F1 equipment to South Africa if the country does return to the calendar.

The tweet was corroborated by F1Insider, who said that tickets will likely go for around R5,000.

It is important to note the rumour that the racing series will come to South Africa is still unconfirmed, as no official statement has been made by the F1 and the upcoming race season calendar is still provisional.

Kyalami Grand Prix

If the rumours are true, the 2023 Formula 1 series will make an appearance at Kyalami Grand Prix circuit in Midrand, Gauteng.

Following last month’s Azerbaijan Grand Prix, F1 CEO and president Stefano Domenicali travelled to South Africa to meet with Kyalami officials to discuss the possibility of reviving the track for future races, according to motorsport.com.

The last time South Africa hosted an F1 event at the track was in 1993, and the venue will need to be updated in order to abide by today’s F1 standards.

The ongoing situation between Russia and Ukraine has ruled out the possibility of a Russian Grand Prix for the foreseeable future, and China’s strict Covid policies have raised doubts about F1 making an appearance there as well.

Similarly, it is possible that France and Belgium will not be included in the final calendar for 2023.

This means there is an opportunity for South Africa to slot into 2023’s line-up, as a maximum of 24 events are allowed per year.

F1’s global director of race promotion, Chloe Targett-Adams, said that establishing a foothold in Africa was “something we’ve been working on for many years now.”

Lewis Hamilton added his own comment, saying last month that “the place that I really feel is dear to my heart and most important to get a race back is in South Africa.”
