1. Amazon Trade-In

If you are an Amazon shopper like me and don’t mind trading your used laptop for Amazon gift cards, Amazon Trade-In program is a great option.

The program lets you trade in not only laptops, but also Amazon Devices, electronics, books, video games and more.

To submit a trade-in:

Go to the Trade-In Store and look for eligible items. Once you find your item, add it to your trade-in submission, answer a few questions (like what condition it is in) and enter the address you’re going to ship it from.

Confirm your Trade-In and print the prepaid UPS shipping label. Then ship your item by the indicated date.

Once they receive your item and approve it, they’ll send you an Amazon gift card (the equivalent of the cash amount for your device).

2. Best Buy Trade-In

Best Buy Trade-In offers a convenient way to trade your old electronics for Best Buy gift cards.

Now, I did a few tests on the site to see how much they offered for various items and to be honest, I was not impressed at all. I got an offer for a Microsoft Surface Pro in good condition for $50. That’s not good! But then again, when it comes to selling used electronics, you don’t usually get near anywhere what you think your item is worth.

3. Offer Up (former LetGo)

Offer Up is basically a local classified app. Sort of like Craigslist but just for buying and selling. This is a great app that lets you sell anything by snapping a picture and posting an ad. And yes, you can sell to local buyers which is great if you need money fast.

Here’s how it works:

Take a picture of your laptop you want to sell and list it on the app.

Meet the person interested in buying it and exchange your used laptop for their cash.

It really is as easy as that.

4. Facebook Marketplace

Facebook Marketplace is a great platform for selling stuff to locals. Unfortunately, a lot of people don’t even know it exist or are simply ignoring its potential.

To find your local Marketplace, look in the left-hand menu (near the top) of your Facebook page. Just click on the link and you’ll be taken to the page where you can see a list of ads for all kinds of things locals are buying and selling.

To add your listing, take a few pictures of your laptop, choose the correct category from the list of categories, give some detail about your device and set your price.

You’ll get a Facebook message from the interested buyer. If you both agree on everything, meet up in a local spot and exchange goods.

The good thing about using Facebook Marketplace is that you can share your ad page with friends so you can get more eyeballs on your ad. It’s a great way to sell your laptop faster.

5. Craigslist

Yes, the good old Craigslist is still one of the best ways to sell stuff locally.

All you need to do is post an ad on Craigslist and wait for potential buyers to contact you.

Here area few tips to help you sell your item faster.

• Create catchy title for your ad. You wanna stand out among tens of hundreds of other ads from people who are also trying to sell their stuff.
• Be descriptive: In the description of your ad, be sure to give as much info about your device as possible. What make and model it is, how old it is, its condition, etc.
• Add pictures: It’s a known fact that for sale ads with pictures sell much faster than ads with no picture. So make sure you include a few pictures from all angles.
• Reply to potential buyers: If you want to sell your laptop fast, you have to keep up. Keep an eye on your email and as soon as you get a question from a potential buyer, reply as quickly as possible.
• Be safe: We’ve all heard of crazy stories about selling to craigslist users gone wrong. The best way to avoid issues, especially safety issues, is to meet up in a safe public space. In fact, in some places, the police departments have designated sections (sometimes it is the actual parking lot of the police station) for people to exchange goods for cash. So find one near you and meet the seller there.

From what I see, it seems like Google’s Chromebooks usually sell much faster than laptops from other brands.

There are also smaller and less-known sites that you can try. Some of these sites actually specialize in only buying and selling used laptops, so you may even be able to get a better deal.

How Much is My Laptop Worth?

It depends on many factors, mainly the age of it. Electronics age very fast because companies constantly introduce newer versions. So, the older your laptop is the less money you are going to get for it, and vice versa.

For example, I just did a quick test for Acer Aspire 5253, and I got a quote for $51.91. I also got a $98.06 quote for an Apple MacBook 13-inch (Early 2008).

So, depending on how old it is and the condition it is in, you could expect anywhere from $20-$30 to $600-$800 or more. The beauty of using sites mentioned above is that with most of them you can get an instant quote, then you can decide whether or not you want to sell it for that price.
