I've got the same problem after the last Mail app update that I got through the Windows Store. Is there any fix for this yet?

Hello

I have found that if you open one of the messages totally by clicking on the open message in a new window then my phantom messages magically go away....lol

None of these work for me.

I have unlinked and then re-linked the inboxes. I have opened a message in a new window and closed it again. I have removed the inbox from Favourites and then replaced it. All the while opening and closing Mail too.

The counter on the taskbar icon seems to be resolutely stuck at "1" unread message. It doesn't disappear when I have no unread messages, and it doesn't increase when I have more than 1 message. It stays at "1" even when Mail is closed.

Has anyone found a proper cure yet?

ETA: I have turned off "Badges" in the Settings, Personalisation, Taskbar and the notification number 1 has therefore disappeared. I guess that means the correct term for it is a "Badge"

I know this is an old topic, but I just started experiencing the same issue of the toolbar icon permanently showing 1 unread message. Tried all of the above to no avail.

I right clicked on the tile in my start menu (not the toolbar icon) and selected "more" > "app settings", then scrolled down and clicked on "Reset". I had to add my Hotmail account again (Gmail accounts were automatically added), although the login details were saved, so didn't have to sign in again.

This appears, for now at least, to have resolved the issue.

I have the same problem.

The biggest annoyance for me is that the Lock Screen shows 1 unread email that doesn't exist even though my main mail app is Microsoft Outlook.

This is how I fixed it, in search type "mail" then go to app settings, scroll to "reset" and click it, even know it says it will delete certain information it didn't when I did it, I use 2 accounts linked to AOL. This worked for me and now I don't have any numbers next to icon

wow!! Thanks for this. Out of all the other helpful tips in the comments above that I tried none of them worked. However, trying the method you described seems to have done the trick.

Like you said, it won't delete any messages and folders when choosing the Reset option but you do have to add back your Hotmail accounts which is easy enough to do.

I also had the phantom 1 email message being shown but nothing could be found. It happened just this morning and it was bugging the hell out of me! The above solution did the trick - for now at least.
