Related PapersThis book argues there is jazz in socialist Hà Nội and it exists as a strand in the official musical soundscape. We seek to explain how jazz managed to come into being in communist ruled Vietnam despite the devastating Second Indochina War with the US, the country where jazz originated, and the complicated relationships between communist regimes and jazz in recent history. Jazz, once perceived as “music of the enemy” and “ideologically decadent,” disappeared in the communist ruled North from 1954 and the whole country following reunification in 1975. Towards the end of the Cold War in the late 1980s, jazz returned to the public sphere in two saxophone recitals. In the decades following the 1990s, a full jazz program at the national conservatoire opened; a vibrant live jazz scene emerged; and Vietnamese jazz as a nuanced genre born. Jazz today is a highly respectable component of the official soundscape in socialist Hà Nội. Our discussion resonates with the New Jazz Studies literature approaching jazz as an optic to understand the nuanced socio-cultural encounters between musicians and larger fields of power enmeshed in complex flows of global political dynamics. We argue that Vietnamese musicians, in order to play jazz under the communist regime, realised the efficacy of de-emphasising the idiom’s overwhelming American association, presenting jazz as a sophisticated musical art form, and finding an organic niche to speak with domestic cultural power brokers and the global jazz world. Through the dedicated endeavors of a few individual pioneers and collective effort of the small community of jazz musicians, we can now speak of a Hà Nội jazz scene that is still modest but self-sustaining and imbued with its own nuanced characteristics. When talking about Vietnam modern history, people often think of a country immersed in blood and bombs in the 1960s and 1970s. The Vietnam War had escalated beginning in 1965 with the direct intervention of the American military and its allies in Southern Vietnam. It is during the most challenging period of the war that typical Saigonese Vietnam modern music flourished, and a constellation of composers and singers that made the 1960s and 1970s the golden age of southern Vietnamese music appeared. Inheriting the tradition of Vietnamese Folk Music, the treasure of reformatted music pre-1945, these talented composers enriched and embellished the musical life of the Southern Vietnamese by creating a school of Saigonese modern music diversified in styles, themes and types. Songs were written using the rhythms of the tango, the rhumba, the waltz, and the bolero rhythm on topics ranging from love, nostalgia, war tragedy, human destiny to the antiwar movement. All degrees of individuality were manifested against an artistic background based on the ever-changing beauty of nature. The proliferation of these songs animated the musical life of the Saigon people, helped them to find relaxing moments of peace amidst the hardship of a country in continuous war. These songs helped people approach life more positively and made it worth living during the struggle for peace. This paper intends to present different aspects of musical life of Saigon in 1960s and 1970s. The artistic products of the mentioned period, thought to be lost and forgotten the time when Vietnam experienced difficulties after 1975, have survived and been rediscovered, leaving impressive prints of the life of the Vietnamese and have thus become a precious cultural pearl in Asian culture. Although the colonial state tolerated prostitution, state regulations forced sex workers to register with the state and limited sex workers’ profits, mobility, and freedom. Consequently, a black market for clandestine unregistered prostitution developed, enabling workers to evade state restrictions. This article asserts that during the inter-war years ) unregistered sex workers used Ả Đào music houses as fronts for clandestine prostitution. The colonial state attempted to curb illegal activities in various ways, but clandestine prostitutes easily evaded the state. By the late colonial era, Ả Đào music’s association with prostitution had damaged its reputation. Singer voice classification is a meaningful task in the digital era. With a huge number of songs today, identifying a singer is very helpful for music information retrieval, music properties indexing, and so on. In this paper, we propose a new method to identify the singer's name based on analysis of Vietnamese popular music. We employ the use of vocal segment detection and singing voice separation as the preprocessing steps. The purpose of these steps is to extract the singer's voice from the mixture sound. In order to build a singer classifier, we propose a neural network architecture working with Mel Frequency Cepstral Coefficient (MFCC) as extracted input features from said vocal. To verify the accuracy of our methods, we evaluate on a dataset of 300 Vietnamese songs from 18 famous singers. We achieve an accuracy of 92.84% with 5-fold stratified cross-validation, the best result compared to other methods on the same data set.
