Tale of the Tape: Leading Receivers - Michael Mayer vs. Jordan Addison

You might notice a couple of surprises when comparing the top receivers for Notre Dame and USC. Then again, you probably won't be so surprised when you consider the context. Michael Mayer is the best tight end the Irish have ever had, so it's natural that Drew Pyne will look to him ahead of any of his natural receivers. Of course, when you make that decision pay off almost every time the ball is thrown in your direction, you're earning those opportunities.

The aforementioned context comes into play with the discussion of...

On Wednesday, Ohio State completed their 13th practice of fall camp. The season opener versus conference foe Minnesota on Sept. 2, if you can believe it, is now only two weeks away. From here on, every practice is devoted to getting this team in the best shape for kickoff, and with how much talent this roster currently has, it’s looking like another promising year for the Buckeyes as they go for their fifth-straight Big Ten championship and third-straight trip to the College Football Playoff.

Keeping all of that in mind and knowing how busy the month of August is for preparation, recruiting news has certainly still been in the mix, but the overall attention to recruiting takes a bit of a step back with the staff focused on the upcoming games. In fact, recruiting meetings with the staff have decreased majorly over the course of fall camp, but rest assured, Ryan Day and Mark Pantoni have their sights set on finishing 2022 off the best way they can and building a 2023 class to carry on the tradition of elite classes under Day.

Buckeyes hopeful to land another top overall QB

Thanks to Ryan Day, the quarterback position has never been better at Ohio State. What he has done in terms of recruiting, development, and then on-field success wise probably hasn’t ever been this consistent for the Buckeyes, but that’s one of the aspects Day is best known for. Fortunately, because of his track record, Ohio State looks to be set at the quarterback spot for years to come, and certainly set for as long as Day is at the helm of the program.

Just look at the current QB room and the amount of insane depth and talent they have. In this regard, focus in on Quinn Ewers. He was the top overall recruit in the 2022 class per 247Sports. In addition, Ewers was the first player ranked as both the top signal caller and top recruit in the country to pick Ohio State. Yes, he has since reclassified to the 2021 class to be on campus earlier, but still, his status is something the Buckeyes have never had before rankings wise.

Ohio State seems like they’ll certainly continue swinging for the fences in every recruiting cycle as they continue to try to bring in the best QB in the country each cycle. The questions swirling around the 2022 and 2023 classes and who the Buckeyes could land will sort themselves out, but the 2024 class certainly will see Ohio State do all they can to bring in the best possible option at QB, and the staff looks like they already have their top target nailed down even this early on.

On Wednesday, 247Sports published their top 100 players for the 2024 class, and without much surprise at all, the top-ranked player on the list was none other than quarterback Jadyn Davis (Fort Mill, South Carolina/Catawba Ridge). Only a high school sophomore, Davis has only played one season of high school football, but much like the aforementioned Ewers, this kid is just a different athlete and the scouting report shows already all you need to know. Whether it’s how the ball seems to jump effortlessly out of his hands or off the field with how mature and well-spoken he is, Davis is a prolific player at the most important position, and is one every top program in the country will be fighting for.

At 6-foot, 185 pounds and having offers from the likes of Alabama, Oregon, Georgia, and a handful of others, Davis is no stranger to the Buckeyes even this early on in his recruitment. In fact, Davis was on campus twice this summer — once in June for a camp and then again in July for Ohio State’s cookout on the 29th. What is telling about that second visit is the fact that he was the only quarterback invited to the event, which should tell you all you need to know about how this staff feels about him moving forward. Clearly, he’s Ohio State’s top quarterback target in 2024.

In addition to Day, with NIL and what the city of Columbus and brand of Ohio State can do will continue to speak volumes in recruiting. Of course, the results on the playing field should do much of the same. The Buckeyes were able to land their crown jewel and top overall player once in Ewers, and now that they’ve done it once, they have a solid foundation for what it takes to do it again. Davis himself has stated that he has plans to return to Columbus yet again for his third trip this year, and that will be for the Oregon game.

Three trips to Ohio on his own dime shows how he feels early on about the Buckeyes, and the staff reciprocates those positive vibes. Here’s to hoping the relationship between the two parties continues to grow.
