HONG KONG – Local workers will enjoy 17 public holidays next year and possibly a 10-day long holiday by the strategic use of annual leaves.

For employees who work Monday to Friday shifts, taking leave on Jan 26 and 27 will create a nine-day extended Lunar New Year holiday from Jan 21 to Jan 29

In a statement issued by the Hong Kong government, a spokesman said that as the first day of January and National Day in 2023 both fall on a Sunday, the day following them will be designated as a general holiday in substitution.

“Moreover, as Lunar New Year's Day in 2023 falls on a Sunday, the fourth day of Lunar New Year will be designated as a general holiday in substitution,” the spokesman said.

For employees who work Monday to Friday shifts, taking leave on Jan 26 and 27 will create a nine-day extended Lunar New Year holiday from Jan 21 to Jan 29.

A six-day holiday is within grasp by taking leave on April 6 because of the Ching Ming Festival that falls on April 5 and the Easter holidays from April 7-10. The holiday can be further prolonged to 10 days by taking two more days of leave, on April 3 and 4 respectively. 

Worker will also find a four-day Christmas holiday as Christmas Day and Boxing Day fall on Monday and Tuesday respectively.
