As the final entry in the Muv-Luv trilogy, Muv-Luv Alternative has quite the reputation. Not only is it part of a trilogy that, according to some, is the pinnacle of achievement in the visual novel genre, some consider this game — which was originally released in Japan in 2006 — to be the best part of the trilogy. So if you?re going in expecting the world…well, you?d have every reason to do so.

I should admit up front that, while I kind of liked the first two games in the series, they didn?t blow me away as much as they have others. In particular, the first game, Muv-Luv Extra, seemed like a relic from another time, as you could literally watch all the terrible tropes that have dragged down visual novels over the years getting their start right before your eyes. The second game, Muv-Luv Unlimited, was significantly better, in large part because it traded in its focus on romance for a bit of sci-fi.

The good news about Muv-Luv Alternative is that it continues on this track. It has some romantic elements, to be sure, but at its core, it?s a story of a guy, Takeru Shirogane, trying to save the world. It builds on the already-grandiose plot of the second game and sends it into overdrive, starting in a world where Takeru has been sent back in time to the beginning of the second game, going through some of the same events (with the twist that Takeru is aware that he?s reliving the past with the opportunity to change the future), and then rocketing on from there.

It?s a lot — which, quite frankly, is both good and bad news. The good part is that Muv-Luv Alternative doesn?t skimp on anything. If you had any lingering questions about how the characters from the first two games wind up, you?re sure to have them answered here. Not only that, because it?s got such an abundance of plot, you?ll never going to feel shortchanged.

Mind you, that?s kind of the bad news, too. Muv-Luv Alternative occasionally seems to forget that editing is a critical part of any good story. All told, going through everything here will take you about fifty hours, which is kind of insane. I?m a pretty avid reader, and I?m struggling to think of any novels — visual or otherwise — that have enough plot to carry a reader through fifty hours. I appreciate that Muv-Luv Alternative?s creators had a lot to say, and had all kinds of twists and turns they wanted to cram in, but at a certain point, ?a lot? starts feeling like ?too much? — and I?d be hard-pressed to argue that this game doesn?t cross that line.

Obviously, the fact that this game is held in such high regard shows that plenty of people would disagree with that assessment. And, quite honestly, I wouldn?t discount those opinions: if you loved the first two parts of the Muv-Luv trilogy, then Muv-Luv Alternative is pretty much guaranteed to round out your experience with a bang.

Those of you who follow the blog will know that I reviewed the first two parts of the Muv Luv trilogy which I enjoyed very much. However, it ends on a cliff hanger to be completed in the final and much longer entry in the series Muv Luv Alternative. If you enjoyed the first two is it worth plugging in the 40 hours needed to finish the story?

Well yes it is. But you will have to slog through the first half to get there.

People say that the first in the Muv Luv series, Muv Luv Extra is slow. But by god is it no where NEAR as slow as the first half of Muv Luv Alternative. As the title suggests, you are once again thrown into another alternative universe very similar to the second one you landed in. Knowing what the future holds for this world, you can use this knowledge to prevent Alternative V, an inititive which sees humans fleeing Earth in order to preserve the species.

This means that the first half of the game plays through many of the same scenarios that the second game included, with very little change. The main changes here are Takeru’s previous knowledge and experience, his inner thoughts constantly monologuing, and long drawn out conversations about space time and multiple universe theories.

I can’t pretend a lot of this exposition isn’t dull. And with the percentage of mechs way up in this entry I can’t say the yawns weren’t constantly on the tip of my tongue. Especially with how goofily the mechs statically zoomed around the screen. I was ready to give Muv Luv Alternative a luke warm review, however the longer I played, the more the doubt seemed to flake away. By the end I realised I was deeply invested in the story of Muv Luv Alternative. I found it just so hard to put down.

The second half or so takes place after Takeru has done enough to change the future of the universe and the changes keep on coming. This is when things get interesting. When the team takes on the Beta, the alien force their fighting against, head on. While I’m not a huge fan of the art style as a whole, the background art and CGs are truly stunning, and in this instalment we even have some amazingly detailed animated sections to dip our feet into. With Steins;Gate Elite claiming to change the future of visual novels it’s interesting that Muv Luv was using these techniques all those years ago.

While the start is slow, Muv Luv Alternative well and truly had me by the end. The ending is packed with so many twists and turns that I never stopped guessing. It does have some controversial material (read: a written description of tentacle rape) but as it serves the story line it only shocked me momentarily. Its the most tastefully written scene of this nature you may ever read.

If you enjoyed the first 2 entrants keep with Muv Luv Alternative as the finale will not disappoint. However, if you want action from the get go, you won’t find that here.
