What are the CONs of 2-in-1 laptops?

Should you or shouldnt you buy a hybrid?

Hybrids or 2-in-1 laptops are computers that can function as both a conventional laptop and a tablet, which can either be a convertible or a detachable. Convertible types are notebooks with hinges that can rotate 360 degrees while the detachable types are notebooks than can double as a standalone touchscreen tablet.

These devices may have more functions and advantages over a conventional laptop or tablet PC, but a hybrid may be a match for your friend but not for you. Its great to do research before you decide on purchasing one, andwe came up with a pros and cons list which you can use as a guide.

What are the CONs of 2-in-1 laptops?

Pros

1. Battery life

You get two batteries with the detachable types because both the tablet base and keyboard have a built-in battery. Also, in general, 2-in-1s offer great battery lifecompared to conventional ones. Hybrids also have more USB ports, making it easier for transferring files.

2. Travel with less stuff

Hybrids are perfect for travelling executives who carry lots of documents or basically for anyone always on the go. Travellers also can easily switch to tablet PC mode if they want to play games while waiting for the next flight. Or, they can just bring the standalone tablet for a lighter load. In other words, you can easily split between work and play easily, convenience and flexibility at its best.

3. Taking notes and reading ebooks are easier.

During meetings, you can easily pull out the standalone tablet and your stylus. Taking down notes (or doodling) is so much easier. During free time, reading your favorite ebook is also easier with the tablet, rather than reading with the laptop.

What are the CONs of 2-in-1 laptops?

Cons

1. Bulky

While bringing less stuff in your bag may be convenient, hybrid laptops are bulkier than the conventional ones and heavier than a tablet. Hybrids screen sizes range from 10 to 15 inches, so editing photos on Photoshop may be a bit of a challenge.

2. Keyboards are smaller

Since hybrids are not as big as your conventional laptop, keyboard sizes are sacrificed. The keyboard feels cramped and typing may be a bit difficult which may also result in Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. Hence, hybrids are not advisable for writers or those who need to type a lot. Lastly, the functionality of most of the keyboards is also very basic.

3. Switching operating systems takes time

Hybrids may have the best of both worlds by having two operating systems, but switching from one OS to another is a bit of a hassle. You have to disconnect the standalone tablet from the keyboard and reconnect it again before it reboots. There also have been cases where the mouse pointer doesnt work so you resort to using the Function keys to disable and re-enable the mouse.

So have you decided? They may be drawbacks but 2-in-1s do offer some great perks. Weigh the pros and cons, and consider your main purpose for buying a laptop so you can come up with the right decision. It also helps to read reviews online.
